From Here to Eternity

I'm in the middle of Incredible Victory, by Walter Lord (A Night to Remember) about the battle of Midway. A very breezy read. If you've ever seen the '70s Midway movie it'll seem like it was taken directly from this book, though I don't believe Lord was credited.

Most of these books listed here are readily available from your local library. It might be necessary to use Inter-library loan, but, you'll have the book.

The Real War 1914 - 1918, is the best military history of WW I that I've ever read.

A Soldier of the Great War ~ Mark Helprin. Great story about an old Italian WWI veteran recounting his life during the war to a young stranger as they walk to a small village.

Have any of you read Birdsong? I thought I’d like it but. Was wrong. I will never go on a cave.

A Farewell to Arms is a good one about the Italian front in WWI and a good intro into Hemingway.

For a fictional account of the war, there is no better option than All Quiet on the Western Front. If you're looking for a good, page-turning general overview of the conflict in non-fiction, look no further than G.J. Meyer's A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914-1918. It's 800 pages of history that is more than accessible to the general reader and history buff alike.

The World Crisis, 1911-1918 - Winston Churchill

Once an Eagle (although it only jumps off in WWI) - Myrer
