on your house?
What type of system? Are you happy with it? What would you recommend to someone who is currently shopping for a system?

We’re planning to get a system sometime this year. Would like to hear your thoughts!

I think the consensus is, without the tax credits that offset the up front cost, these panel systems rarely pay for themselves.

It's only worth it in cities where you have constant sun. So in the southwest/desert cities, where there is rarely a cloud in the sky. I've seen some in places along the south and don't understand why because we get a lot of cloud coverage/rain.

Average lifetime savings are ~$30k, LIFETIME. So you won't be seeing the savings until you're dead.

Check out signature solar in Sulphur Springs and on the web. I intend to get a system within the next year and have been watching their off grid kits.

That’s actually the company I’m looking into also. There’s a homesteading dude on YouTube who has a system from them and recommends them.

I believe they also get you all the information for the 30% tax credit. The off grid setup I'm looking at also qualifies.

Don't solar panels lose effectiveness over time, due to deterioration of the panel clarity and the overall ability to generate power from the solar intake?

That depends on a number of factors…There are companies out there who are selling/leasing systems at ridiculous prices, which will never pay off.

I’m looking to purchase from a reputable company and probably install the system myself. There’s a 30% tax credit that will offset some of the cost. And newer systems are more efficient.

Another nice benefit is having backup power during outages.

We are talking about still having over 80% of their generating capabilities after 25 year for the crappiest panels. High quality panels would still have over 90%

My monthly payment on my solar panels is less than what I was paying a month to Duke Energy. Just got mine turned on not to long ago

Duke has also started the first stage of price hikes that will happen over the next 10 years. We can only get energy from them in this part of NC

They are scum bags, I live in the area that had our substations shot up causing massive blackouts

Duke passed the cost of fixing everything off to the customers. My bill the two months after was more than double what I was paying. A $300+ bill when I wasn’t even home for 2 weeks that month and we turned everything off.

I considered buying a small off grid system to power my shop, mainly my pool pump. In case of an outage I could back feed the house for lights and 110 outlets.

I never pulled the trigger because I was worried it would get to be a hassle monitoring the system and the usage.

I saw they have hybrid systems, but that might have been to complex for me to diy.

A good buddy of mine has them powering a off grid camp. It seems like a enormous pain in the arse to me.
The generator kicks on Dailey. He is running a entire house though. Washing machine and everything.
My opinion. Not worth the cost to set up. He should have spent the money to run power.

There was a company walking my neighborhood a few weeks back, and we took a meeting with them. Infenergy I think they were called. We considered it, seemed like a good deal, but decided against it after reading reviews of the service the company provides.

Had them on our old house and luckily we sold it before this happened, but yeah you're looking at $7-8k to remove solar system and reinstall if you have to get a new roof after.

I've been doing finance for residential solar for a while now. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has.

Yeah it's a huge pain in the arse. Most decent companies have roof condition requirements for installation. But there are a ton of shitty ones out there that don't care. Especially if you're just doing a regular loan, cash or HELOC. If you finance through any of the big solar companies they have minimum underwriting standards.
