This is my first year coaching at the lower level AAU and I came across this on FB. Im sure this could be said for travel baseball/softball.
Admission for some of these games are higher than some college basketball games.

My fiancé coaches club volleyball. Her team is the 4th team in their age division and she has no D1 prospects and they don’t travel. $4,500 a girl.

Lol
The whole thing is a scam in every sport
If you’re not having fun from 7-13 then you’re doing it wrong
If there is some potential starting to show as they progress after that then start getting feedback about how serious your kid is about the benefits of getting serious about their sport
There’s zero reason to put effort and money into getting your kid seen before they’re 17

If people are willing to pay for it, that's on them.

????
How much of that does she make?

My son is in the 8th grade plays on a regional level and we have to pay tourney fees which is about $500 per team per tourney and on top of that they charge the same parents $15 each per day to get in an watch the games. Some places might $20 or $25 per person per day. One weekend cost us about $100-140 or so. To put it in context, the admission rate in my area this past season for high school games was $10 per game.
Luckily for me, my son has a decent coach and is getting something out of it at least.

Honest question, do AAU coaches make money? If so, how much?

The truth about any “advanced” youth sports team beyond little league:
If your kid is good enough, you’ll never have to fork out a dime for your kid to play. This is includes room & board, travel, meals, uniforms, etc…
This is the cold hard truth.

It is mind blowing that non-wealthy people pay a lot of money for their kids to play volleyball.

100%
And the biggest issue isn’t parents caring and pushing hard af for their kid to be a professional athlete.
It’s the kids who have no chance, which is 90% of them, whose parents make a fun game a nightmare for a kid who just wants to have fun.
What’s wrong with watching your kid run around sucking at baseball? I have no kids but that seems fun.
This shite is about building relationships, figuring out that your actions and skills can add to others, and working hard to find what you enjoy.
It kills me that some parents bypass all of that and make their kids feel like shite if they aren’t shining on some stupid 11u sports team.

And I’ll go one step further, those same parents aren’t spending afternoons working with their children to improve their skills. They’re relying on 1, maybe 2 hours a week of practice with their coaches who have anywhere between 12-15 players to coach. And nothing is happening on the weekends except games, which is no small matter, but really makes up very little of what makes a successful ballplayer.
And most importantly, are these kids WILLINGLY working on their game in the off-season? Not being pushed by parents? If not, just send more of your money to the government so they can at least waste it in creative ways.

One of my son’s teammates is mmmmaaayyybbbeee DIII level good (has a couple of scholarship and walk-on opportunities) and he did AAU last summer and had the same impression. It’s just putting together athletes for a weekend with 0 development for a few thousand dollars.
He decided on legit university camps for this summer to feel out the rest.
