I think this may be DeNiro's most overlooked and underrated performance.

Max Cady is an absolutely horrifying character and DeNiro just nails it. He makes you feel uncomfortable in every scene he's in.

I am going to teach you the meaning of commitment. Fourteen years ago I was forced to make a commitment to an eight by nine cell, now you are going to be forced to make a commitment. You could say I'm here to save you.

Love that movie.

"I can out-learn you. I can out-read you. I can out-think you. And I can out-philosophize you. And I'm gonna outlast you."

This entire movie is forgotten.

It’s great.

I always thought Nick Nolte was really good in it.

The guy that wrote the book(John D MacDonald) also wrote the Travis McGee book series, which could have been a great movie series.

Hollywood tried to adapt a couple of those books, but they got just about everything wrong(houseboat became a sailboat, Florida became California, bad casting, etc).

I love the DeNiro version and it is one of my favorite movies but don't sleep on the 1962 Mitchum/Peck version either.

I only disagree that it’s overlooked and underrated. To the extent that it is I agree completely. He really nailed a complex character in that Cady was complete trash but also very intelligent and manipulative and tough as a coffin nail.

That scene where he viciously attacked the chick (Nolte’s lover?) was brutal.

I randomly put it on a week or two ago and it was the scene where he sort of seduces/grooms Juliette Lewis. And it was so uncomfortable but at the same time you could tell it was working, and in the next scene she lashes out at her dad about how “I don’t even know what he did that’s so bad” or whatever. And it hit me at just how much of a monster Max Cady was.

I haven’t seen the movie start to finish since the 90s but I remember it being really good. And I remember being completely creeped out at how insane Cady was when he was about to drown at the end.

DeNiro and Lewis made that scene seem almost too real.

Haven't seen this movie in a LONG time. Might need to do so. Nolte and DeNiro were great.

Incredible movie. I had no idea that Scorsese directed this until I opened this thread. Need to watch it again soon.

The Rewatchables podcast did an episode on Cape Fear a few weeks ago. I like that Scorsese brought back Peck and Mitchum from the original. Also, one of the best Simpsons episodes was based on Cape Fear (it's one where Sideshow Bob steps on like 10 rakes).

I love how they're watching Problem Child in the theater because Scorsese really liked the movie.

It's weird how this movie is sorta forgotten. Unbelievably good.

If I remember correctly in the book the prosecutor was the good guy who put away a rapist. The rapist seeks revenge upon release. The rapist wasn't a tongue-talking, religious nut job, he was a cold blooded, psychopathic criminal. I wonder why they changed it.

Not sure how De Niro's Cady doesn't fit the bill.
