I don’t need a passport until next summer. I want to try to get it now so I have plenty of time for it to come in. What steps do I need to take to get one ?

Apply normal as the link states above. It will take 8-12 weeks at the most to get it.
Even if you expedite you are paying 80 bucks including postage to get it two-three weeks earlier.
Also, the worst countries to get visas do not take more than a month, so you will be fine.

If you're near a city that will prepare and deliver one to you on site I recommend it. I got my passport this way and it took about an hour. Be sure to have all of your paperwork in order and complete and there should be no problems. The person who took and filed my paperwork seemed very pleased and surprised that I had everything in order. I was also surprised that there were literally two other people in the facility at the same time that I was so it was very slow. All of the people there (which was in Buffalo) were the nicest people that I have ever met at any government office before or since.

Could have sworn you had to have an immediate travel need to actually get a passport in-person at the facility.

No need to spend extra to expedite. You've got way more than enough time.

Go to your local post office.

I can complete the whole thing online? How do I submit my documents and pictures?

Go to your local post office.
Make an appointment now. Go on line and fill out all the paperwork and print it out. Check or money order.
that was what we did, but the PO was like 4 months booked but here is a local office here (Little ELM, TX) we went to, and it was way easy.
2nd the not paying to have it expedited.

Here's a tip for searching for appointments. If you want to look for a small PO to go to, it will be easier to get a spot. In order to do so, you have to look up the zip code of that town, PO, etc. in order to find them. No matter how many miles away you tell it to search, it gives you only the 5 closest to the zip code you put in. Search around different areas till you find an available appt.

I was able to secure an appointment at the courthouse in downtown Austin a week out. All the post offices were booked for months. The courthouse releases a certain number of appointments every week on Monday mornings.

If you choose to go to the post office, get your mind right. It will be an exercise in futility.
But you paid for it. But you got that going for you.

I guess it depends where you go. I did mine at the Marksville PO and the whole thing took like 15 minutes.

If you are in a bigger city, you might need to call and see which location offers the service.
In Mobile for example, there are two post Offices that offer Passports...the one downtown and the one out in Grand Bay.
