Seems like a fun hobby, just trying to think of something useful to put it towards other than melting aluminum cans and making ingots.

Better check what your HoA bylaws say about operating a heavy industry in your neighborhood.

Pour the molten aluminum into anthills.

You can make stuff like this and sell it to cities while you laugh all the way to the bank.

Go to tire shops and ask for their used wheel balance weights. Melt them down and cast lead bullets or fishing weights.

This is a great idea.
I've also wanted to make the ant colony sculptures. Be a neat item to sell at local street fairs.

I've done a little. If you're going to try to cast actual parts for something, or a project that is particular, it pays to go ahead and get clean metal to melt down. People start with using scrap and find that the learning curve is steep with all the impurities. It just complicates the entire process. I found that out helping a guy cast parts for an old Studebaker coach car. We never could get a decent part using salvage. We did great using clean, pure brass and bronze. We did door and window handles and a couple other oddball parts.

Can you make more with the ingots?
Was told awhile back scarp folks would pay for cans but not melted cans

The more I think I've seen it all, the more the world surprises me.

I have. I have done lost foam casting, and sand gravity casting. I make parts for machines that I build and nick nacks. All hobby stuff. I don't make any money. What do you want to know?

Throughout all of human history the most valuable man in a town was the metal worker. Seems like a step backward to regain the strength and independence of the man over mass dependence. Show me a man who can work metal before 100 kids who are enslaved by the cell phone.

Just lead. Fishing jigs and sinkers. Pretty neat to make my own. Not what you're talking about, I know, but related.
