I would imagine it depends on what's in your bed. I'd go with dark mulch, but no red.

The answer is to do half the flower beds in pine straw and the other half in orange mulch.

Go with softscape for the combo! It looks like pine straw but the color and mulch last longer. Negative - it's expensive.

I put Softscape (chestnut color) down this year to replace 3 year old cypress mulch. This stuff is beautiful. If it holds color for >1 year I’ll be ecstatic, prob won’t ever use anything else if so. Had to remortgage the house to pay for it tho lol

Grade A cedar mulch is the best. It’s expensive (and can be hard to find) bur keeps its color, smells good and helps with bugs.

Buy the busted bags of mulch at Lowe's. Color doesn't matter. I bought 6 bags to cover my onions, lettuce, carrots and radishes. $12 and I'm done.

The difference between cedar and pinestraw is weeds will germinate in the cedar. The weeds won’t germinate in the pinestraw and must germinate in the soil. Pinestraw is better for weed control but they both look nice.
