It has to be Skynyrd. Allman Brothers have a jam bland bent that makes them less "definitive" as southern rock.
Yep. Allman Bros are the fathers of Southern Rock.
Lynyrd Skynyrd are THE quintessential Southern Rock band.

I specifically recall one of them saying the Neil Young reference was a joke. Apparently he later wrote "Powderfinger" for them? (The Beat Farmers cover of that is great).quote:All that was put-on bullshite though, for marketing - they were frauds, watch their documentary

Several decades after "Okie From Muskogee", Merle Haggard claimed it too was a joke, actually a satirical attack on "The Silent Majority". Maybe -- or maybe he wanted to get some positive press from the woke media.

not THE Southern Rock Band, but a shout out to Black Oak Arkansas

Skynyrd is definitely THE Southern rock band. No question. Love me some Allmans though.

In the sense that I hear skynyrd out and about and I could be anywhere but if I hear… I don’t know… Molly hatchet? Odds are I’m Deep South and getting a more authentically southern experience?
That's a good point, I doubt many people outside those raised in the south have MH's first album (their loss).
Also can't sleep on CDB, they made some great southern rock early on.

It’s Allman Brothers and it’s not close.

CCW. Yes I know where they are from.
Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" is at least a southern rock song.

Three pages and only one mention of The Outlaws? I guess it depends on how you define Southern Rock. As iconic as Skynyrd was/is, in my opinion they almost became caricatures of themselves and the songs started to sound alike. Allmans were more blues than Southern. And maybe it’s just a matter of taste; I much prefer the style and sound of the early-to-mid Outlaws. Hurry Sundown doesn’t have a dud on it. Green Grass is their Freebird. The double guitars on There Goes Another Love Song will give you chills, I Can’t Stop Loving You will make you cry. And to cement their Southernness, Breaker Breaker is 10-8 fer sure, and they did a great cover of Ghost Riders, yeehaw. For whatever reason, they never had the commercial success the bigger names had, but they’d be my pick.

Skynyrd
Molly Hatchet
Outlaws
Blackfoot
The Allman Bros.
Skynyrd being #1 but the others in no order.
ETA- After reading the thread reminded me to mention The Marshall Tucker Band of course.

"Took half the cops in Dallas County to throw one coonass boy in jail."
One of my all time favorite song lines.

either playing to the woke media or that he was an ex-con from California that wasn't scared to partake in any substances legal or otherwise.

Drive By Truckers are the best modern one. Not sure anyone has a better three Album run than Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and The Dirty South.
