My wife and I are looking to go on a cruise this summer, out of New Orleans. I see Norwegian and Carnival offerings. Is one better than the other? Is there a gap in quality or are they comparable?

When choosing a cruise go with the one not offering discounted rates and special packages.

It is too good to be true. You’ll end up in the middle of the ocean with people you’d rather not be around.

I wouldn't go near any of them unless 100% staffed. The last one we went on 3 of 4 restaurants closed as well as multiple bars. Trip was half-assed at best. I'd give it another year or 2.

Get ready to have your knuckles checked on Carnival. The wife, teen child and i went on Disney cruise. I hate disney. I loved this cruise so much we scheduled one for next year out of Fort Lauderdale. There's plenty for the adults to do. There was an irish pub on the Magic and i had a great time in there.

Think about the movie Titanic. Which type of crowd would you rather be around?

Norwegian Cruise Crowd

Wife and I have taken two 7 day cruises on Carnival out of Nola in Sept. Going on a 3rd one this Sept. Our anniversary month. Both previous trips we had a great time. There are mostly adults on these 7 day voyages...after labor day. Book a suite or higher tho. Don't listen to these dipshits. Have fun.

Warning. Cruises out of New Orleans and Galveston are the worst. And they go to worst places. Do yourself a favor and drive to Florida to depart. The private islands the cruise lines own are the best part of cruises nowadays and the ones out of New Orleans don't go to them. The Carnival boats in Florida are nicer also. Royal Caribbean out of Florida is your best bet

I avoid cruising in the summer. It’s way more expensive and all of the ships are overrun with kids. April, early May, and late October/early November are the most affordable and weather is great!

You have more options going out of Galveston. Both Carnival & RCCL port newer ships out of there. NCL ports there randomly.

Carnival & NCL port older ships out of NOLA. Pro: they’re cheaper. Con: they draw a crowd who can only afford cheaper.

And the ports don’t suck. You can get to Roatan, Belize, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, or Cozumel on 7 day trips out of NOLA or Galveston.

If you want to reach the eastern Caribbean islands, then Port Canaveral (Orlando), FLL, and Miami are your only options. You’ll also have more ships/cruise lines to choose from.

Look for lower capacity ships, theyre usually the older, more sophisticated crowd. Some "luxury" lines have included shore excursions.

Silversea, Regent Seven Seas..ect.

I’m goin carnival outta Galveston in July on the Bahamas itinerary. I’m gonna make the best of it. I think the slightly pricier and longer Bahamas one should weed out some of the Walmart crowd. Hoping so at least. I don’t think carnival is as bad as most on here make it out to be unless you book the cheapest 5 day ones outta Nola or maybe Galveston.

My wife and I did a 7 day Carnival out of Galveston a couple years ago and it was night and day compared to New Orleans based cruises. We also stayed in a “Havana” room which had restricted access to the pool and bar area which was a plus

Good to know. thanks. I’m just gonna make the best of it. A little bitter bc the kids got to vote on this trip and my California coast road trip got over ruled by an effin cruise. Lol.
