Murray State has only finished .500 or worse twice since the mid 1980s

McMahon was the head coach of both of those teams

Was that before he had them rolling because if so, I have hope

Can’t wait for a similar or worse season next year so we can go ahead and get him fired

McMahon is 6-29 career vs P5 opponents. We’re fricked

He never had them rolling. He had two tournament wins in 7 years there.

Surely he took over rosters with zero players right?

Of the last 6 Murray State coaches spanning over 30 years, McMahon was 4th in winning percentage.

To be fair 2 wins in 7 years from a team in a 1 bid conference isn’t really bad

To be fair, it’s not good either. Certainly not something you see and say “this guy needs a 6 year contract at a P5 rebuild”

We overpaid in contract length and buyout amount for a mid major coach. Base rate statistics show coaches like McMahon are reaches. There are more failures than successes. Well, as long as football is doing well Woodward will be in good graces with the fans and big money donors.

Any additional context? Roster composition of what he inherited. What was the program’s trajectory during his time?
Just curious

MM is the antiwade, can’t recruit, can’t coach, and is boring as frick.

MM is Clark Kent, the mild mannered reporter.
Wade is Superman.

And the school had 3 tournament wins ever before McMahon. They had 10 NCAA tournament appearances in 28 years before him (36%) and 3 in 7 under him (43%).
ETA: Actually it was 3 in 6 for McMahon. He won the conference the other season but the postseason got wiped out by COVID.

McMahon was promoted from assistant coach to head coach in 15-16 after Steve Prohm left to be the HC at Iowa St.
In Prohm's four seasons at Murray St. he went 104-29 (54-10). In his final year at MSU (the year before McMahon became HS) MSU went 29-6 (16-0).
In McMahon's first season MSU went 17-14 (10-6). It was the fewest wins MSU had in over a decade. In his second season, MSU went 16-17 (8-8). It was the program's first losing season in 31 years.
To his credit, MSU improved again after that (two of those year's Ja Morant was on the team), before going 13-13 in 20-21.
MSU had consistently been a very good mid-major program since the late 80's when McMahon took over. 13 NCAA Tournament appearances...which is really impressive for a program in a "one bid" league. While McMahon certainly had his share of great moments (last year being one of the best seasons in school history), he also has "lows" not experienced by any of the 6 coaches that preceded him.

He had three seasons that were below the standards of the program, but two of those were his first two seasons. The other was the mid-COVID year that saw many programs have uncharacteristic bad seasons. As you noted, he followed that with one of the best seasons in program history.
He had a learning curve at the start of his tenure, but built the program back up winning 4 conference titles in 5 years and winning 2 NCAA tournament games. Yes, Murray St went 16-0 in conference the year before McMahon took over, but they didn’t win the conference the previous 2 seasons and missed the NCAA tournament the last 3 years under Prohm. In fact, they only made the NCAA tournament 2 times in the 9 years prior to McMahon and only won the regular season conference title in 5 of the previous 11 seasons. McMahon clearly elevated the program from where it had been in the previous decade or so.

There are plenty arguments for a coaching change but this is not one.
To put things in perspective, Will Wade’s record vs. power 5 through his 1st season at LSU was 10-26.
The biggest thing about McMahon’s tenure at Murray St. is he didn’t have to build a program like he has to do here. He took over a very good program and outside of a couple seasons kept them rolling.

I believe Murray St was also his first head coaching job. Lack of consistency is to be expected. What’s important is whether adjustments were made the following year to right the ship. Our fan base doesn’t seem willing to allow for that.
