Have this exact dream. Graduated almost 30 years ago.
Always the same class - Economics.
Always the same scenario. Forgot to go to the class all semester and show up on finals day.

No idea. Not all dreams mean anything useful.
Did you remember feeling anxious or relieved when it happened?

Yes, I still have those dreams exactly as you described.
So the good news is either we’re not crazy.
Or we’re all crazy.

My variation of this dream is that I totally forgot a big assignment that took weeks for the rest of the class to complete. Then by the time I found out I don’t have a chance to deliver it.
Basically I’m anxious that I am forgetting something or missing something important. Or not paying attention to what I need to be paying attention to.

Driving ones are common too, usually represents a feeling of control or a lack thereof. If you can control the car that’s good, if you can’t it means something in your life feels out of your control.
I just had one of these last night, my college roommate was driving my car and he was driving erratically and I couldn’t control it. Kept telling him to slow down. And just yesterday morning had a bunch of work changes out of my control.

Never.
And always.
Interesting point regardless. Something to ponder.

They’re really just our brains trying to sort things out like sorting library books.

Usually it's a class I'm somehow registered for without realizing it
Usually for me, it's a class I registered for but meant to drop / didn't attend and suddenly realize I didn't successfully drop when final exams are approaching. It's now past the drop date and I'm going to be stuck with a failing grade.

Nothing worst then waking up in the middle of the night stressed about thinking you bombed a final or overslept and missed the final. I still have those bad dreams also.

It’s kind of nuts how people’s feeling and urges drive a lot of their dreams. I like reading about the links between the two.
Wish I could remember more of my dreams. Especially the good ones.

Waking up and thinking I missed a final and the fear runs rampant momentarily that I failed a circuits class.

Yeah I like to lay in bed after I wake up and think about every dream I had first thing. If you get up right away and make coffee or look at your phone you’ll forget them.

I get a very similar version
Instead of a final, it usually involves not doing a project or an essay
Or being scared to look at my final grade for a class I never showed up to

Embarrassed as hell, as you would expect.

Yep. I can lay there and reflect on the dream and it will still slowly escape my memory as I get more awake. It’s the weirdest feeling.
I’m not a morning person though.

The fact that 90% of people get these dreams 10+ years after graduating is proof at how fricked up and unhealthy higher education can be sometimes. We put enormous stress on college students regarding things like class registration and an exam potentially determining their trajectory

Yeah-I think it may have to do with some stressors at work and life and a feeling of being a little out of control.

I think the “not prepared” dream is just a reflection of some kind of anxiety you are feeling. Like maybe you are a little overmatched at work or need a vacation.
I think, after pondering it a bit and reading replies, for me anyway and what’s in my head, it’s about avoidance and/or overwhelming feeling. You know you’re behind and falling moreso but instead of addressing it you are compelled to avoid it and/or feel overwhelmed by the task of getting caught up.
Work in progress.
Years ago (decades) I beat a dream. I’m going to try planting a “you dropped the class” thought before crashing and see.

These are all very familiar. For me it is realizing I was enrolled in a course that I had forgotten about until the final weeks of the semester.
