Before SS what did people do? Families took care of their parents at the appropriate time. The near universal disappearance of the nuclear family is completely the doing of our social dishevelment exacerbated by the social umbrella programs.

Well most kept working till they died. I agree families stepped in and the disintegration of the nuclear family is probably the single biggest negative event that’s happened to the country.

But it's the disheveled mess we made, and we have to continue the support of the elderly not just because of the promise made to seniors, but to broaden the load of "family" across the breadth of the entire nation since we already have single-handedly fricked ourselves out of a national identity of a nation holding to the family structure. We've made it into the nanny state and there's no way to turn it around. This ship is going to crash. Crash hard, too, splittering into maybe 3-5 new nations, not that Texas wasn't already a nation, but I digress.

SS doesn’t have to be what brings the economy down if we just take basic steps to shore it up and turn it back into what it’s original purpose was versus what too many use it for as a retirement plan.

Forced social security taxes should be a felony.

It’s the worst ROI on the planet.

Jesus dude wtf are you even talking about?

Name one form of private insurance you are forced to pay?

SS is the biggest scam. Bernie Madoff went to prison for far less scams than SS.

Raise the withdrawal age, fine, but means test? frick that

Even if you don’t earn an income and pay FICA, when you purchase goods/services they are passing that burden on to you.

The whole program is garbage.

Ss goes bankrupt the year I’m supposed to collect all the $$ I put in! To just say no cuts is unrealistic! We need to preserve and protect peoples hard earned money they spend and pilfer! It’s so wrong what our corrupt leaders make us worry about!

But let’s just leave the border open and allow illegal immigrants in willie neely. Because over 60% of illegals take an entitlement and school seats. Better yet let’s send another $100B to Ukraine!

SS is not currently in deficit. Medicare is not currently in deficit. Looking to the future, those programs will be in deficit at some point.

But, in a budget which ran $4 trillion in the red during Biden's first two years, programs currently in surplus should not be the focus. The source of the $4 trillion CURRENT overspend should be the focus.

Says the fricker suggesting means testing.

I think stringing people up for theft is too much, unless it's giant schemes that involve thousands/millions.

Such a calculation is provided in the 007 Trustees Report, where it is estimated that the present value of scheduled benefits exceeds the present value of scheduled tax income by $13.6 trillion; this is the financing gap that program reforms must ultimately close. To put this figure in perspective, eliminating the permanent deficit could be accomplished with an immediate and permanent 3.5 percentage point increase in the payroll tax rate (to 15.9 percent), or with roughly a 0 percent reduction in current-law scheduled benefits.6

Right.
Problematically, you don't know what that original purpose was.

Disability needs to be reformed. People that have never worked a day in their life with nothing wrong with them getting checks. And people that work 45+ years get it a couple years after they retire and die.

Guess that’s fair to libs tho…

That would be entirely fair. I wasn't part of this hypothetical inter-generational bargain to pay things forward all those decades ago, and I am not inclined to infinitely prop up a class of ungrateful whiners.

The gov't has taken a ton of my money (I'm self-employed), grown it at 1% (and even that incompetently), and then I get taxed when they return my pittance. It's very difficult to see how anyone thinks that's a fair "inter-generational bargain."

True charity is of course no problem, and any Christian man would presumably do his duty. But that's not what's going on in our beloved USA.
