Both of them keeping the work a secret for so long is also impressive.
ETA: obv easier for Kaufman because he’s dead but still.

The Lawler/JR combo on Monday Night Rae was the golden age of wrestling commentating.

suffered a stroke at his Florida home yesterday and underwent a subsequent surgery.
I’m guessing a thrombectomy. No other reason to get surgery for a stroke. Usually a good outcome if treated quickly. Also I’m guessing he has afib and had an embolic stroke, considering his MI on national TV several years back. Now both attitude era announcers likely have a facial droop (JR’s from Bell’s palsy).

That was ultimate work. There will never be a better troll than Kaufman. He and Lawler were great friends and both did a hell of a job selling that gimmick
props to Andy Kaufman for being a true outsider to the business yet having the respect for it to sell & keep kayfabe
helped make Lawler 1 of the biggest heels of all time at that time
ETA: obviously hoping Lawler pulls through after this episode

A ventriculostomy is also possible. A history of Afib means he was likely anticoagulated. So it’s possible he had a bleed.

Same here; I grew up watching Mid-South Wrestling and went to the Mid-South Coliseum a few times to watch wrasslin'.

Probably just needed a new heart valve. Common cause for strokes and a common repair surgery.

I'm sure he was with a mid 20's dancer girlfriend at the time.

I heard a story that Lawler met Andy Kaufman's parents on the set of Man on the Moon. At first, Kaufman's parents didn't want to meet Lawler because Andy never told them that he and Lawler were working an angle. He worked his freaking parents! They thought Lawler legit hospitalized their son.

His BBQ is not king. It sucks.

Loved me some Midsouth Wrestling on Saturday mornings, channel 5 Memphis.

Grew up watching him on Memphis wrestling…..I’m getting old.

Saw that too. I think that was on a recent Tales from the Territories episode or something similar.
Also when Kaufman was in the hospital he got full treatment and stayed for days maybe weeks without a peep that it was fake
