Comparing Malls from Manila to Alabama and Minnesota

Manilla- vibrant, lots of stores, lots of customers, and first world innovation and architecture.
Galleria and Mall of America- not many customers walking around and closed stores. Murders, gang-member customers, and tossing children over upper level rails will destroy any business.
We’re becoming a third world country now, which is why we can’t have nice things anymore.
Before anyone brings up The Summit in Birmingham as a counterargument to the Galleria, The Summit had a smash-and-grab a few weeks ago at the Apple Store.

Not at all surprising that the malls in Metro Manila and Taguig City in the Philippines are vibrant and fashionable, and malls in major cities across the US are decrepit.
Social life in the Philippines is basically about 40 years behind the Western world; they're enjoying what we had in the 1980's here.
Malls are meaningless today in the US as they're dangerous crime hotbeds, and furthermore it's much safer and easier to shop online nowadays.

Modern malls in America seem to be uninviting for the most part. Architecturally and aesthetically as well as usefulness of space, they seem to be cold.

Malls are real estate time bombs. You get about 30 years and most go to shite. Obviously there are exceptions like Tyson's Corner. Throw in that the dregs of our society tend to use these places as baby sitters and the money runs away

The Galleria Belk had a smash & grab of designer handbags valued at tens of thousands of dollars just this very week.

How are malls doing in mid-sized American cities and suburbs with low crime?
It seems like Lakeside Mall in Metairie continues to be busy, and it’s been around for 50 years or so.
It’s an honest question. I don’t want to be the contrarian in this “America is a dump” dog pile.

Here’s some thought about possible ingredients that make malls successful in today’s internet world.
1) A sizable middle class population in the area that far outnumbers the lower and upper classes.
2) Low crime. Active policing with community support and a a good criminal justice system.
3) A well kept and frequently updated mall with good anchor stores along with a good mix of decent small shops.
4) A lack of competition from too many malls and shopping outlets.
5) Ease of access and proximity to the shopping population.
My guess is that until technology makes another advance, there will still be a demand, even though it’s a smaller demand, for brick and mortar shopping centers.

Haven't been to The Gonnorhea since 2014. Only went then because the kids had gift cards from Christmas. My head was on a fricking swivel.

Having a Filipina wife and spending a few weeks over there almost every year, I can say that there are many things about the Philippines, in general, that are far worse and far better than the US. All in all, I'd live there rather than here if I could.
All in all , though, Kuala Lumpur would be one of my preferred places in the world to live, if I didn't have to hear the Muslim call to prayer constantly on loudspeakers...
