For the past few weeks, my son was working on the bird study merit badge for scouts. So as a result, we've had a bunch of bird feeders up and tons of daily visitors. Since new years, I think we've had close to 20 species visit.
Well, right at lunchtime today a Coopers hawk took down a dove (Eurasian collared I think) in our back yard (caught it on our security cameras.) Over the next several hours, I watched it devour it under the bushes against our back fence through my binoculars.
My wife loves little birdies and when she got home from work hours later, she made me chase the thing off. He took what was left of his prize but left me a pile of feathers.

Still counts as a bird.

I mean we're still "feeding birds" right? We'd seen him around before (he was here yesterday, my kid saw him), but he'd not made a connection before today.
I felt a little sad at first when I thought it was a mourning dove, but alot less so when the feathers indicated the introduced/invasive Collard dove. Our DNR lets you shoot them all year, without a license and without limits.
Re-watching the attack on video, I was surprised at how low he came in for the attack. He couldn't have been more than a couple feet off the ground.

They LOVE bird feeders. They swoop thru just over the fences a few times a day. It is marvelous to see em slam one.

It took that long? Most hawks I see can debone a duck in about 3 minutes

several years ago I was in a drive thru line getting a snowball. Some young kids were feeding popcorn to pigeons. Out of nowhere a hawk swooped down and decided to have a meal. He just sat there eating the breast as I took 10-12 pics. I thought it was a young Coopers Hawk

I had to chase away 2 Coopers (or sharp shins) that were stalking my feeders last week.
Best thing to do is feed your birds where they have at least some cover.

I've had one last year on security camera take out a wood duck. It also stayed a couple hours eating and resting then eating again. Left when I got home and scared it off.

I have a feeder and see this at least once or twice a year. They were going so fast they slammmed into the fence next to the feeder. Now I have three male cats I adopted and no hawks or squirrels around the feeders.

I probably could, but the "incident" took place so far away from the cams it was pretty pixilated.

They are. One's in the crabapple tree and the other is hanging by a couple of snowball hydrangeas. Most of the little birds hang out in there. It's like a small thicket.

I have a coopers around also, but this sucker will actually get into a spruce tree in my yard that houses a lot of sparrows. It’ll flush the sparrows out and whack them as they fly off. Crazy to watch.

They might be my favorite raptor.

A few years ago, we were driving home in a driving snowstorm . We saw a little sparrow sitting in the middle of the road. So I stopped, picked him up and put him in a little bush in the front yard of one of the houses there. No sooner than I had gotten back in the car, he flew. When he did, he had a Coopers in two. I guess he was hiding in the street to get away from the raptor....
