What years was he active? I never listened to him.

I want to say from 1945 to 1981. He was all Cubs. He called some Bulls games and Blackhawks. Called a lot of Bears game. It was not all about Jack Brickhouse it was about the Cubs. He called Ernie Banks 500th home run also. I loved this guy with Loyd Pettit

I just want Joe and Boog back. Is that so much to ask?

Yeah, always heard he locked his partners out of the booth on the 715 call so he could have it to himself. Not sure if there is any truth to it but heard it more than once.
I don't know if he literally locked them out of the booth, but the contract clause giving him exclusivity of calling Aaron's ABs while chasing the HR record is well known among long time Braves fans. He was not missed when he left town.

“You may think this Braves lineup just goes out there and swings at every pitch…. and they do…. but they also make you throw strikes.”

Forget Harry Carey, Skip Carey or Milo Hamilton. The best broadcaster for Cubs was and always will be Jack Brickhouse. He and Loyd Pettit doing the lead-off show and the tenth inning. Harry was all St Louis and hurt the Cubs because he over shadowed the team. He stayed drunk in booth and never acknowledged his kids or grandkids.
As to Harry, while I would agree he wasn't a great father or grandfather or role model - anyone who cannot see that his coming to the Cubs right at the emergence of Cable t.v. and WGN going nationwide showing the Cubs every day was the perfect storm - right guy at the right time, you weren't in tune with things properly.
Cubs became a national brand in that perfect storm and there is IMHO no way it explodes in the same way it did with Milo or Skip or pretty much any of the announcers of the day the way it did with Harry.
When you go to road games with the Cubs these days, even when they are lousy, there will be thousands of Cub fans anywhere you go and in some stadiums more Cub fans than the home team has.
Love him or hate him, consider him a bumbling drunk at the end or whatever, but his contributions to that reality are real and significant.

Heard a stat earlier that a Caray has been part of the Braves broadcast team every year since 1976.
That's crazy.
That's crazy.

With such a terse goodbye and (based on everything I've read) this being his decision, I wonder if something happened behind the scenes.
I heard on the radio today (St.Louis) that it may have been a fake account, but still got retweeted through the arse.

Growing up on a farm in GA, before mp3s and before satellite radio, the best you could do in a tractor was usually am/fm radio or cassette tape. Those broadcasts back in the day really helped fill in the hours, from pre-game to game to post-game. There was no sports radio, either. It went back to regular programming after the games. Wild to think they had 4 announcers back then, no clue what they have now?
Even the bulldogs, can't stand the team, but I sure did like listening to Munson call a game and fill about 4 hours of my day or when he called the Falcons.
I honestly enjoyed baseball more just listening to it, I can't make it thru a game on tv or in person.

Amen. I grew up in the same background in the Midwest. Some of ours didn't even have a radio or AC. People always bitch about too many games, but having a game to listen to every day or night in the summer heat sure made my workday a lot more enjoyable. Buck and Shannon on radio were my eyes and ears for many, many games. And I loved every second of it.

He was with the Mariners when I was a kid. I think that was his first MLB job.

This is from 1991. So, apparently Chip worked for the Braves before going to the Mariners. He probably was part time with the Braves. And the Mariners likely offered a bigger role.
