My boss gave me a $100 gift card for Christmas bonus. Took the lady out to dinner last night and went a little heavy on the apps since we had a gift card. Kept it under a bill so I wouldn’t need to come out of pocket. Turns out the gift card had $74.62 and left on it. Someone must have given it to him. He spent on it and regifted it down to me.

What would you do?

You have to bang his wife. It is the only solution.

That's a huge slap in the face and lack of respect/appreciation.

That’s pretty hilarious if this is a real story

I'd make subtle but effective jabs in front of the group but that's me.

Thank him for the “gently used” gift card.

He may or may not wonder what you meant by that. If he asks, get more value out of the opportunity . Tell him your wife took care of the bill using the card while you were in the bathroom, paid the balance herself and later told you in the car that the card was in an amount much less than you told her.

This way your boss hears that it affected your wife. If he’s human, he will feel twice as terrible than he would if it was just you - because now your wife thinks you’re working for a cheap bastard. He’ll feel like he owes you one.

Then keep looking for another job. When you get an offer, tell him before you accept the offer. Find out.

Weird timing. I was given a $100 gift card for Christmas and I tried to use it this morning at the store and it wouldn’t go through. Called the number and it said it had $100 balance, so not sure why it wouldn’t go through. Bill was like $80.

How was it noted that it was $100?

Assuming it really was, why not just go tell him... "hey Boss, I think the restaurant shorted you on your gift card"

Enjoy the reaction, and report back.

I like that response.

If the balance were actually $0, I'd just assume some error ocurred during the original purchase and just never mention it. A used gift card, though? That's a new one.

It’s one of the ones you pick up at a checkout line in Walgreens or a place like that. It had the $100 printed on the outer wrapper. You can see balance online. It shows he spent it the day before he gave it to me when he was in Mississippi on a job site.

You will end up getting that $25 out of him one way or another. Pushing the issue isn’t going to help matters.

you can check where the gift card was used. something similar happened to me. A renovation company I used in the past asked me to give a recommendation to a potential client in exchange for $100 gift card. They sent two $50 Amex cards. One was attached to a paper and the other one wasn't. Turns out someone used one of the gift cards at an auto repair place in Mexico the year before. That company refused to send me a new card. Still made $50 but annoyed as hell.

About 3 years ago, my company sent out an email everyone was getting a $25 gift card to Cheesecake Factory and 2 cards for free slices of cheesecake.

My card only had the $25 gift card. Talked to a couple of other employees and they said the same.

Found out later the they misordered the amount and basically gave some to some employees and none to others. No mention of it or correction email.
