If this has been covered before I apologize. I did a search for “pedal” and “pedal board” and didn’t find what I was looking for.

My question is what is on your pedal board? What is a must have? What is a waste of money and space?

I have tube screamer and soul food distortion pedals (one for clean boost, one for actual distortion), a tuner, looper, and air pedal for my ipad. I have wasted money on a couple others i sold or traded. I am happy with what I have. But I have space.

What are some others worth having (about a 50/50 mix of country and southern rock; telecaster and les paul electrics and martin and taylor acoustic electrics).

I got rid of a lot and just keeping things simple lately.

(From Right to Left)

KORG Pitchblack Advance tuner

Fortin Zuul Gate

Ibanez TS9 (1992)

Fortin Blade

BOSS HM2 (1985)

Also have a Dunlop JC95B Ranier Fog cry-baby wah on the way.

Tube screamer and soul food are a nice combo. If I wanted to add pedals to that combo I would do something like wah, delay, reverb. Some people like compression and EQ pedals..I don't know about all of that. There are lots of options for modulation(Chorus/vibrato, tremolo, phaser, etc.)

Beware of the pedal industrial complex. If I knew everything I knew now when I started, I would have just bought an HX Effects or Helix. Pedal equilibrium is a bitch to find.

Perfect timing ... I'm actually swapping some boxes out on mine today. I've had it set up for a variety of gain profiles (the end target is my '66 Super Reverb).

I may add another Pedal Power block so I can definitely add the Phase 90, the SupaTrem and the Deja in the previous photo, plus some of the colors in this photo ...

If you're playing country, you have to have a compressor. That's next on your list. My Tone Press is superb. Forever before that, I used an older MIJ three-knob Boss Compressor Sustainer that was perfect as well. Every legit player in Nashville has a old blue Boss CS in their stash of goodies, that should be a big hint.

I’m trying to build a second board right now, but typically, I have:
tuner (boss), pitch shifter (ehx pitchfork), drive 1 (ehx glove), phaser (phase 90), delay (behringer vintage analog delay), chorus, drive 2 (boss blues driver), reverb (rougarou banshee), and a cab sim pedal (behringer).

I’m probably about to rearrange that board, though. And, like I said, I’m building a second board for another band (different music genre) and considering building a board for trumpet.

Boss's MIJ Waza Craft division also recently reissued the Heavy Metal pedal. I'd bet it's true to the original only better.

I say that because my maroon Boss Delay in the above photo is the Waza version and it is LIGHT YEARS BETTER. They added some modern features - mainly increased delay time - without compromising the tonal warmth of the original circuit. Perfection IMHO.

Is there such a thing as a pedal would give me the “Jerry Garcia” type sound?

Keep in mind a Mu-Tron is just an envelope filter, think of the wah sound of Garcia's lead on songs like FOTM. Any envelope filter will get you in the ballpark without breaking the bank (the Q-Tron, for example). This was a small part of his overall sound.

Garcia did use other pedals (overdrive, distortion, phaser, delay, reverb, then a more complicated setup by the 80s - 90s) but when people talk about his sound, it's generally his clean amp --> single coil pickup tone IMO.

I'll update with a picture soon, but:

guitar >
Ernie ball jr volume pedal > ( > tuner)
Analogman Sunface Fuzz>
Cheapo Amazon Boost pedal >
Fender MTG Tube Distortion >
Octonaut Hyperdrive (Klon clone) >
Analogman Envelope Filter >
Stryman Lex (Leslie pedal) >
Analogman Dual Analog Delay >

Fender Princeton Reverb.

I also have an Analogman Prince of Tone & Analogman Ibanez TS9.

Big in to Analogman pedals right now.

"Garcia Tone" can be many different tones...

Easiest way to get his Europe 72 and or FOTM "tone":

Fender Strat, Fender Amp, Boost / overdrive pedal, JBL speaker in the amp, Wah pedal, Envelope filter pedal for FOTM tone. Turn the bass to zero on the amp and the treble to 7 or so. Jerry played really clean tones boosted.

Main board. I had an addiction for a moment. Powered by a Zuma underneath.

Small board of stuff that just doesn’t fit with the main board right now.

For the Garcia/filter/Mu-Tron guys ...

You guys may have remembered I got one of these from my wife for X-mas last month. I don't want to disengage it. Its Mu-Tron sim alone is worth the price of admission but I got it for its auto-wah abilities. Every one of my shop clients who has tried it, regardless of the instrument we used or the genre they played, raved over not only how good it sounded but how good the filter felt under pick/finger sensitivity. This pedal will never leave my board.

Source Audio Spectrum Intelligent Filter Demo

As for authentic Garcia effects, I can't say. I gave the Grateful Dead an extended listening two weekends when I was in college 35 years ago, one high as a kite and one stone cold sober, and I just couldn't get into them. I'll revisit them one day in the shop this week and see if it's better with age.

I didn't know how many other fellow JG fans there were here. I've been playing for 35+ years but mostly all acoustic for 30.

But during the lockdown I got the itch for electric... and got a looper pedal. I couldn't believe how much more I played, and I got much better.

I have a Donner Circle Looper Pedal and a bass/octave pedal.

In the market for a delay. But this mess is what I'm currently messing around with.
