No love for Jack White? He is always experimenting with sound and has great riff’s on many of his hits.

I never knew Bill Murray played drums with the Dead.

I never knew Bill Murray played drums with the Dead.
Listen to him compliment his band on this epic jam song as he takes them from the lightest of taps on the high hat to a full blown crescendo.

Billy is an excellent drummer and he did a lot more than just lay down the beat. He was a part of the conversation, reacting to and influencing what others were playing whether it was during those years from ‘71-‘74 when it was just him or the rest of the time when Mickey was in the band. Also consider Dark Star which is a legitimate jazz song. Phil anchors the rhythm on that song and the drums provide color.

You rate EVH as the most talented MUSICIAN of the last 50 years. I wasn't aware that he played anything other than guitar. Did he play other instruments? I honestly don't know . . .
To me, Prince is CLEARLY the best all around musician ever. That cat had #1 songs, and ENTIRE albums where he played every instrument and sang every note. And they sold big. It doesn't get better than that.
Yes, EVH also played keyboards. Wanna say he got his start winning classical music piano contests as a kid. This influence is evident in Eruption. In their early days they played without a bass so he had to fill in rhythm parts real-time.
He was also part of VH's patented backup vocalists.
Any discussion about greatest rock guitarists will inevitably include EVH. Apart from Jimi, not sure any others have been as innovative and influential. I'm not sure Prince is in any all-time great discussion for any instrument.

These kinds of threads are always stupid. There is no way to determine this and people either pick their favorite, or they pick someone obscure to sound edgy.
Anyone can mimic someone great, but the talent is in the creativity, not the the mechanics of operating the actual instrument - be that a guitar or a paint brush.
There are teenagers who can play every Hendrix or Van Halen song, but they can't create anything.
There are painters today that can copy every Picasso to such detail that an expert can barely tell the difference without using tools.
But Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and Pablo Picasso have the talent.
I personally think Eddie Van Halen is the best, but there are a handful of others that are in the argument.
But to make my list you have to be creative, not just a great actual player. Those are a dime a dozen.
