From Cavill's official Instagram:

quote:

I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have been by my side through the years....we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember.... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.

It's incredible how poorly DC has handled Superman that last 10 plus years. Cavill was a great Superman and had nothing but shite to work with since he got the job.

Gunn should be fired immediedtly.

A heroic classic, slick, positive, Cavill Superman could have re-jumpstarted DC and opened it up again.

Sure, it would take some magic story wise to reboot the entire thing, but it could have been done.

This is a giant blow to WB.

I have no clue what they are doing now.but I did not like the Gunn hire from the beginning. He has a very specific worldview of his movies, and it may work with GOTG, but it does not work as a whole multi-franchise engine.

This is very very very bad news...

He looked the part but the writing, direction, etc, produced a pretty wooden and uninteresting Superman. I'm sure they just want to start over, and go with a younger cheaper actor to kick off a longer term storyline.

I don't believe that Gunn/Safran made the decision lightly. This whole thing isn't on them, it's on those previously in charge of the studio and Snyder for dropping the ball so badly.

DC hires Gunn and never should have. He’s going to further ruin the franchise.

DC FINALLY doing the right thing and you retards say stuff like this.

They need as full a reset as they can get and a cohesive vision.

Gunn is doing the right thing even if I liked Cavill.

Pushing Cavill out of the role is a mistake. It frees him up for the Bond role, however.

Shame. Cavil’s Superman was really the only thing I liked about the shitty DC movies. He was dealt a crap hand.

Is Gunn just doing a total reboot of all things DC? The Justice League was in his Peacemaker show after all.

Curious what The Rock thinks about this decision (but not really)

I think Gunn is going to be a massive failure, personally. And this was an awful decision.

The Suicide Squad movie he did was hot garbage.

I liked Cavill too, but . . . the whole thing needs a reboot.

I’d can every project out there (even the shitty CW Supes) and start fresh - make the TV, Movies, everything all-inclusive just like Marvel.

Sometimes ya just gotta pull the plug and wipe the slate clean - even if some good apples get thrown out with the rotten ones.

Maybe he’ll show up in those board favorites Ms. Marvel or She Hulk. Or Black Panther 3? Is there time for them to get him in the Captain Marvel sequel?
