What determines the Area 9 “either sex” weekends?

I seriously believe that it has put a hurting on my property and properties surrounding. We have a lot of does where I hunt. They eat everything and I believe we barely have any deer that stay on the property itself, which is a pretty large piece. What sets us apart from everywhere else where it’s either sex all season? The amount of bucks we used to see just isn’t there anymore and I think it’s because the does just mow everything down. I’ve actually got pictures last year of a big nanny running off a buck.

I want to say we were considered area 6 when I was in my teens, I may be wrong, but I don’t recall doe weekends when I was younger.

I wish we would go back to killing does on day of your preference with tags especially on private property. I probably need to shoot some does or let my kids shoot some but I have does with fawns on the camera today still full of spots. I can't make myself shoot a doe that has babies around it still with spots.

I’ve got a few sets with twins, and some with singles, bunch with spots. But I’ve also got some ol gals just roaming around by their self. It’s also like they know when we can shoot and can’t. Don’t see a doe all weekend, oh but Monday morning, I see 6.

Yes, Area 6 was divided around 2006, maybe?

Not sure about your area but I get it. I hunt in north Florida and there are only two weekends all season that are either sex. This makes no sense to me. Im lucky enough to get “doe tags”. We shoot them when we want but it’s 1 tag per 100 acres. We have tons of deer. I wish they would just give tags with a license. It’s hard to judge a working man for shooting a four point when it is illegal to shoot a doe. I feel buck quality would improve if they would change this.

I was told a some years ago by a state representative that LDWF was in the process of allowing either sex to be killed throughout the season in area 9 like other areas but flooding on the east side of the Mississippi River from hurricane Gustave killed plenty deer so they kept the limit on doe days. Seems like the deer herd should have recovered by now.
If they still want to limit the number of does killed, reduce the number of doe tags but have the ability to kill at least one doe at any time. Right now, if you can’t go on the specified weekends, you are killing zero does.

In area 9 myself. Mostly marsh. Our lease has an overwhelming population of does … same thing. Only a few bucks caught on camera - hunting about 1200 acres

This is the best answer for all private land hunters dealing with doe days.

Is it really? How does that go down? Call a biologist out and see what he thinks?

Your local friendly government overlords of course.

Think of the reaction one of our founding fathers would have if they read your post.
The government is telling a private landowner what he can and cannot kill, when he can and cannot kill it, on his own property based on a set of criteria that they just get to decide without being elected
