Tyler Grubbs From Louisiana Tech might be somebody to watch...

He just jumped into the portal. He'll be a redshirt junior next fall.
6-1, 223-pound middle linebacker.
Stats
He played in five games this year and then he was out with an "upper body injury." But in those five games he posted 48 tackles - and the game he got hurt in, the UTEP game, he'd already had nine tackles in the second quarter.
If you watch him play he's not physically dominating, per se, but he's definitely active and when he gets a good hit on a running back he'll stop him.
Is he better than West Weeks, for example? Not sure. But he's a Holy Cross kid who would crawl to LSU if he was offered and if nothing else he'd bust his arse on special teams (and that in itself is something we could use).

We have plenty of mediocre linebackers. We have no need to bring in another.

Doubt it. Not enough sample size for LSU to extend an offer. We don't need another Penn.
We need a GOOD ILB right now. Not one we THINK can develop into one.

those are impressive numbers for any freshmen. possibly

Not gonna knock the guy, but I’d rather take more players like Wingo. He was already in the Sec and talented enough to play at LSU. With our current depth issues we need to only take guys who will see the field and not take a flyer on a maybe player.

The point of taking this guy isn't to solve the problem of Greg Penn. It's to get guys who'll hustle on special teams.
We didn't have anywhere near enough of those.
This guy might be overqualified for that, but it's damn few kids from Holy Cross I ever met who wouldn't chew through wood to play football at LSU. I can't help but think he could work out on that basis.

I mean I would have loved to get a full football ride to LSU, and I’m from Louisiana, but I wasn’t good enough and I’m good with it. If you aren’t good enough to cut the cake it doesn’t matter if you are from Nola or BR or West Monroe or Ruston. We have role players in the Weeks bothers anyways.

white LBs come to die in the SEC
Posted on 12/6/22 at 8:59 pm to macaoidh
Good player, sure, but not sec. Shoulda stayed right where he was.

He sounds like a tackling machine. Plenty of room on the roster and Kelly did say they would prefer Louisiana guys, but who knows if LSU will offer?

Approximately 23 percent of the linebackers in the NFL are white, higher than any position on defense.

How many from the SEC

Initially read this post with the thought "hell yeah, we should be adding any adequate LBs we can get" but I think the first few comments disputing this sentiment are correct.
As the commenters above have already stated: At LB, our issue isn't really depth, it's top-end talent. Now, I think a large part of that issue will be dealt with by virtue of the fact that sophomore-year Harold Perkins will actually be a real, fully-actualized inside linebacker, as opposed to a freak athlete who was too impactful to take off the field but wasn't necessarily capable yet of fulfilling the full range of responsibilities at the position.
This year, Perkins was mostly asked to do 3 things and 3 things only: (1) rush the passer, (2) spy the passer, and (3) play VERY basic coverage. He was frequently tentative with his run fits, which led to him often getting totally washed out of the play on RB runs, and we saw UGA use a lot of personnel groupings and route combinations designed specifically to put him in conflict as a coverage guy--and usually that resulted in an advantage situation for their offense. Next year, he will be INFINITELY more comfortable with the nuances of the position at the higher levels and should thus be able to successfully take on the full range of responsibilities.
However, especially given the way House likes to call his defense (especially with respect to the front seven - lots of sim pressures, lots of disguised looks, lots of different players at different spots doing all kinds of different things), adding a high-end ILB would be a massive boon for us. We really didn't have any ILBs this past year who were strong in all facets--they were largely guys who were strong at one thing and weak at another. Adding another "depth" type guy isn't really going to change anything. We need a difference maker--someone who can handle a lot and allow us to deploy Perkins in a way that maximizes his insane athleticism.

Makes you wonder why the sec overlooked them since they’re clearly good enough doesn’t it

Are you insinuating that there are white linebackers that are good enough to play in the NFL, but not good enough to play in the SEC?
I've seen some some stupid takes, but that might be the dumbest.

I watched a few Tech games the past two seasons. The only P5/SEC caliber player is the receiver Harris from Comeaux. Other than that it's a lot of guys who are G5 level players, or FCS players. Which is funny because a few years ago 18-19 I could point out a half dozen or more P5 level guys on your team and almost no FCS level guys in the two deep. I don't know what happened there, if you lost a big time recruiter or if Fritz and Napier made some good hires to start getting those guys, but talent wise losing 20+ guys like the tweet I saw earlier can only help if your coaches can find G5 level guys to replace FCS level guys on your two deep.
I do think Harris could be nice piece to fill in for depth if needed. I trust Sloan to evaluate and communicate that though as I think he was the guy who recruited Harris from Comeaux a few years ago.

Is he a film room junkie? Does he possess the qualities of a young man any man would want his daughter to date? lunch pail type of kid with a high motor? extremely high football IQ? Like having another coach on the field? If so then I am all in on this kid. Call Gordon and tell him to make it happen.
