Drive from Brussels to Florence?

Beautiful and interesting or not enough to make the 12 hrs worth it? Skip it and fly? We like off-the-beaten-path, small town type stuff. Driving through Switzerland seems like it couldn’t be bad.

Seems like a whole lot
How many days total is the trip? I would assume youd want to split that drive up into about 3 days to get to actually see more places.. but at that point you only have about a half day to explore a location. If you were in Europe for about 3 weeks to a month then sounds like a great adventure. 10days to 2 weeks I wouldn’t think it would be worth it especially with such prevalent train travel.

I'm traveling between Brussels and Florence in July. Brussels Airlines and Ryanair both have flights for $50-150 bucks one way. I'm flying.

Make sure you purchase one of these if driving through Switzerland.

I've taken a train from Brussels to Florence.
But I also stopped for a few days in Paris and Lauterbrunnen.

Would be an incredible drive. However gas prices are pretty bad here in Europe. Currently in Finland it's about 8 bucks a gallon. May be closer to 7-7.50 a gallon between Brussels and Italy. If you can get a diesel rental it could save you quite a bit.

There are some good stops along that route.
* Luxembourg City has a great city center and fortresses built into cliffs.
* Strasbourg or Colmar are both well-preserved Alsatian (German & French influenced) cities.
* Lake Lucerne and Lake Como
The drive from Brussels to Basel is going to be very boring and not very scenic, but the Alps will be awesome.

Nothing is set. Just starting to plan a trip and deciding what we want to do. One thing or another has kept us from ever going to Europe and it’s time. We’ll probably spend about 10 days. Another option is just spending the whole time in Scotland and include the Faroe Islands. We’re not too interested in cities, but do love architecture. Also Renaissance art, thus Florence, but that might need to be another trip.

How are you getting back OP? I haven't looked in a couple of years but it used to cost like $250-400 to drop a car off in a different country.
how many people do you have? Just 2? I ask because a car makes more sense financially with 3 or 4 people.
I absolutely love a european road trip, but if that's not your plan for the meat of the vacation I'd probably just fly.
I'd also consider a vacation with things closer then 12 hours, that's like going to Destin and then also visiting Indianapolis on the same trip. Doesn't make a lot of sense really.

Naw, that’s 13 hours/750 miles plus what diversion(s) you take in Switzerland.
Use the time you save as more time around Brussels and/or Florence.
Fly early in the morning or late in the afternoon/early evening.
If early, drop your luggage at your Hotel in Florence before you can check-in and have the day in Florence.

You may also want to check the drop fee. Renting in Belgium and returning in Italy may incur some expensive charges.

That’s a very good point. We definitely don’t want to drive back again!

When you put it that way it does seem like a little much.

For a 10 day trip (I'm presuming two of the days are travel days to get to Europe and back) that seems like a terrible way to spend one (or two) of the days. I'd find that drive exhausting and mountain driving gets old fast. JMHO.
