Want one simply to punch paper, tinker with reloads, maybe varmints one day
I'm a fan of long barrels, so would prefer 26" barrel for this, but not an absolute but must be at least 24"
Options
Bergera B14 HMR - what I think I want
- ~$900
- not american made
- based on rem 700 action which I have always liked
- 24" barrel - only negative I have in actual gun itself
Savage
- 12 BVSS ($1100), varmint low profile ($1200)
- little more $
- not as good looking a rifle
Tikka
- ~$980
- not american made
- not a 26" barrel - 23.7? damn europeans
- something about it, not as big a fan
Remington
- alpha 1 appears to be only new 22-250 you can get
- $1600 - what?
- recent quality issues
- not 26"
Howa
- no 24-26" barrel I could find
Weatherby Vanguard Weatherguard
- under $600
- not a huge fan of the stock
- 24"
Not sure I'm interested in other brands - ruger, winchester, browning, christenson

savage axis II XP 450 bucks
you can upgrade the stock (a Boyd’s thumbhole varmint would be nice) and add glass and still be less than those others, with an adjustable trigger

I have a .17 hmr that I love. It's got the wood grain stock and the thumbhole on it. Can shoot the dick off a gnat at 200 yards. Smooth as butter. I'd look into this gun if I was you.

The "weatherby" stock does fricking suck, but it won't matter too much with that caliber.
I like the vanguard a lot. Great trigger and great action.

Twist is another thing you need to consider. Do you know what bullets you want to shoot? Since you reload, I’d be looking for a Tikka with a 1:8 twist from your list and shooting heavy bullets. I think they also make a 1:14 so be sure you check.

Go do a search on Gunbroker for that caliber. You will find there are a quite a few really high quality older name brand rifles to browse through. I have a Rem 700 with 26” barrel. A good friend has a Ruger M77 Mark II they both shoot great.

Of the guns you mentioned that fir your criteria, I'd go w/ the Savage followed by Vanguard. The Vanguard is made by Howa. Ruger makes some really accurate and nice bolt actions, as well.

I have a friend who has one in a Ruger No. 1. By far the most accurate rifle I have ever personally seen. He reloaded the ammo.
