Yeah, if you get it so you don't have to actually spend time with your kids they will. If you're a good parent it's probably not an issue.

Tell him that he can go do lawn work if he really wants it. You really think about how to spend money when you have sweated your balls off for it.

The straight A student who already does extra work around the house for cash needs to go work in the lawn for his own Christmas gift, of which he’s never asked for before?

Geez.

When I was a young man I would work two jobs from October until December every year. Just to make sure I got my kids good gifts for Christmas. Didn’t get much sleep but it was worth it

I asked for a Go Cart one year in the 1970’s. I was probably about 12.

We didn't do Christmas but if I wanted it, I mowed yards to get it. We were free range in many ways.

I’m old school. Never allowed video games in the house, but would spend 2 k on his guitar. I’m not funding useless games. Kids had to be developing skills of some sort. Games are a waste of time.
Let the downvotes begin… cheers.

My Ex conditioned my precious kids to expect LOTS of gifts no matter the cost. When I would mention it was overboard, she would flat out tell me I was a bad father and I ruined Christmas.

Whomp whomp whomp

And yes, morons, %500 IS expensive for one damn gift.

You conveniently left out the fact that it’s an expensive gift.

Just like the people who shout the praises of weed with none of the consequences, blanket statements like this rarely work out.

I'm not a gamer. I played sports video games as a kid and teenager, but stopped around the time I was 20. I don't get enjoyment out of video games. That being said, games are a great way to develop strategy and hand-eye coordination. They are no more a waste of time than learning guitar or watching sports.

I'm sure since you limit things that are a waste of time in your household you're the model of efficiency.

It really is.

Christmas is out of control. I buy stuff for children only, and put a $100 limit on each gift.

If my child or grandchild wanted an xbox, I'd buy it randomly for good school work or behavior so he's not conditioned to get a lot of shite at Christmas.

It’s pretty common to spend at least $500 total on your kid’s Christmas for middle class people. Who cares if it’s on one gift? Just cut back on the other random knick knacks he probably never cared about.

It’s normal for older kids to move to one big gift versus a bunch of small things.

I agree. Kids today get more presents in 1 year than I got my entire life. Warps their idea of what Christmas is really about. The best Christmas is full of friends/family, laughter and good food/booze. The gifts are bullshite fluff promoted by corporate greed. I challenge you to not have gifts this Christmas and focus on relationships. It will open your eyes to how you have been manipulated and controlled for money.

Then why are you balking at the one time he askes for something somewhat extravagant for a Christmas present?

I asked for a SNES for Christmas in 1991. It was $200.

Your 15/yo asking for a current gaming system is nothing new. $500-800 seems fair. I would not consider it a greedy expensive gift.
