Are we supposed to remove the plate and turn it in or just leave it on the car?

Yes and cancel it on the OMV website before dropping insurance.

I’ll have my butler check with one of the chauffeurs.

Take the plate.
Report sale online at LA DMV website. You will need buyers name and address and DL #.
Destroy plate (or hang on wall in garage).
Only exception would be a trailer with a permanent tag.

Did you buy a car at a garage sale?
Posted on 11/17/22 at 2:50 pm to theantiquetiger
In LA you gotta turn the plate in and do some paperwork at the DMV or you will get your license flagged. Other states have different rules.

You don’t have to turn it in.

I paid for the plate, that bitch is mine regardless what the rules say.

No, got me a new curb crawler, putting the old gray mare out to pasture

Yes.. I sold a car to a co-worker and he swore that he would turn in the plate.. He didn't.. I went to re-new my license and had a red flag and had to pay a little over a $100.

You do not have to turn in the tag but you do have to report the sale to DMV online.
They don’t make you turn it in anymore but they are going to keep registration fees accruing under that registration until you report the sale which cancels the registration and plate number under your name.
ETA: This applies to Louisiana.

Im pretty sure you have to remove the plate and turn it in.

I run into this a lot. You have to make sure the registration is canceled. Florida(where I’m an agent) is one of those states where the tag must be turned in. Otherwise, when you cancel insurance, it appears as if you’re driving uninsured and your license could be suspended.

you can cancel it online and leave it on the car. Make sure you cancel your insurance before canceling the plate.

Remove it and turn it in to cancel your registration. Do this BEFORE you cancel the insurance on the car.

You absolutely keep your license plate.
Be sure to cancel the plate/registration on the La DMV website when you drop the insurance
