What should I know going in? Who should I root for?

I grew up going to Kingfish games in Baton Rouge and loved it. Mom would drop us off with $10 and that was enough for a ticket, Pizza Hut personal pizza and a drink

I did recently too. I just jumped on the Seattle Kraken bandwagon since they are new.

Maybe start with a player you like and go from there?

I’ve never not enjoyed watching a good ole hockey game. It’s pretty entertaining stuff.

There's only one team you should root for, and that's Dallas

All true virile high-testosterone Americans are Avalanche fans. And last year was our moment and we are set up for a nice 4-5 year run. Also, we have Cale Makar, the best defenseman I have ever seen (fight me). Communists and pederasts and Communist pederasts pull for the Red Wings. The Oilers have a great run ahead and a great fan base. Boston is playing well and old school. If you enjoy suffering, you can be a Maple Leafs fan. The newest teams are Vegas and Seattle.

I'd pick the "local" team or a city you like and go with that. Hockey is about knowing your team really well because it's a highly positional/role-player game. Once you get to know the personalities on your team you'll love it.

Here's an 8 page thread on this topic that provided some pretty good insight. Granted it's 8 years old so probably some is outdated but it might be a good starting point:

Blackhawks or Preds if you’re in Louisiana. Blackhawks are down right now so would be good to join in and watch the team grow.

San Jose Sharks

Young rebuilding team with a star or two

They play late games so they rarely interfere with other sports

Sharks would be cool too. If you become a diehard and tell them you’re a fan from Louisiana you’ll be treated like you’re visiting from overseas.

Do not become a Blues or Caps fan, it’s not worth your sanity.

<-Caps fan

ETA: I guess the Sharks are the new de facto choking dogs of the NHL though

Hockey used to be hard to watch. But with the HD TV, it is fantastic. Hockey is super in person, too.

3 games coming up soon right here in Baton Rouge.
