I hope BK takes LSU where Saban wanted to before he got distracted.

If those two can win a title I’m pretty sure you could put any bozo on the sideline and win one at LSU. However, we have an actual adult in charge now

I think what Saban showed to the higher ups, was how much championships cost.

Prior to Saban, LSU was always trying to get by spending as little as possible and getting mediocre results. I don’t necessarily give him credit for the teams on the field, but I will say that he started the machine.

It’s pretty simple. Look at the state of LSUs program before saban was hired and look at what all it has achieved since then. The program was at its lowest point in its history, all the top talent in the state were mostly going elsewhere, LSU was literally a joke in the CFB world. Then he comes along and changes everything. He re-established recruiting ties in the state, we won a natty within 4 years. He laid the foundation for this program to keep being successful, And we’re now a powerhouse program bc of that. You think les miles would’ve been able to do that? Or O? Absolutely not. Outside of bama nobody has accomplished what we have in the last 20yrs. I know it sucks that he went to bama and we’re stuck having to play him every year and fight him for recruits but the man put this program back on the map and that’s not an opinion it’s a fact. Growing up in the 90s and watching all those garbage teams, if you would have told me the success lsu would have after the year 2000 I would’ve thought you were nuts.

If nothing else, Saban showed the potential of LSU to be a national powerhouse. He woke the sleeping giant. That helped with hires and recruits long after he left.

He resurrected it.

Would he have won 10 here? Probably.

Kelly can win 2 for sure.

And Saban isn't where he is at today without LSU. Remind me of his record again when he was at Michigan State. Hell, even Dinardo beat the breaks off Michigan State and Saban in a bowl game.

All I know is I feel a hell of a lot better about our program than I did 10-11 months ago. This program was in shambles and I feared we would lose even more of our team to the portal than we did. I figured it would take a year just to stop the bleeding and start moving in the right direction.

BK has us in contention for an SEC title late in October. I know we have the worst odds of the 4 teams in contention, but just being in this position is pretty freaking amazing. Not only that, but the culture shift of the program in that short time is incredible. I was a huge fan of the BK hire and had confidence he would rebuild the program, but I never expected us to be this far along.

This is an underrated thing IMO, but this team is also fun to watch and easy to like.

LSU had a chance to hire Steve Spurrier BEFORE Saban. They went the cheap route and promoted Mike Archer. And even when Saban left and he KNEW he was leaving and Spurrier was available, he made sure he delayed until the very end.

He knew what he was doing, he made sure Spurrier was off the market before taking the Miami job. Then he had the gall to recommend Houston Nutt for the head coach position here.

I think what he’s saying is that Saban raised the level of visibility and desirability of the program to the National level for recruiting in a way that helped for years to come by winning the first Natty since 1958.

Not only that, but he got improvements to the infrastructure of much of the Athletics facilities. You can’t underestimate how important this is in making your program a desirable destination for both recruits and coaches alike.

Holy frick.

Saban did NOT wake the sleeping giant.

Dinardo took over LSU in December 1994. In 1995, LSU went 7-4-1. In 1996, LSU went 10-2. In 1997, LSU went 9-3 and beat Saban in the Independence Bowl.

Dinardo woke the sleeping giant. He got LSU into the Top Ten in 1997 and 1998.

Dinardo brought in Faulk and a host of players that ended up winning a NC under Saban.

Dinardo had issues, but a big problem he had was that LSU was too fricking cheap to play football at an elite level.

Mark Emmert saw Dinardo's success and the reasons for his failures. He decided it was time for LSU to play big-time football rather than skimping nickels and dimes.

He offered Saban a five-year contract for $1.2 million annually. Only three other coaches in the country were getting paid a million per year: Bowden, Spurrier, and Fulmer.

Emmert built the facilities need to play at an elite level.

In short, LSU (Emmert) decided to to play at an elite level in 1999. Then Emmert hired Saban. Saban did not cause the change to play at an elite level. To the contrary, Saban was a result of that change. He was the coach who received the benefit of that change in direction.

Combining gigabrains and experience, there are few better than BK in cfb

ND fans were quite delusional that they could replace him with a superior predecessor

It’s time for Bama’s run to end. I think LSU rising back to prominence is a key component of that. Give them props for what they’ve accomplished in the last 15 or so years, but I feel that the end of the Bama dynasty is on the horizon.

I agree totally with what you said about DiNardo’s recruiting. Not only did he start recruiting better in state and getting those players to buy in, he showed outside coaches what this could be with the right coach. The only thing he and the program needed was the willingness to spend.

The only things I disagree with is that the Saban hiring had more to do with Joe Dean, who brought Saban to the attention of Emmert and the building of facilities had more to do with Skip Bertman, named Athletic Director the following year after Saban went to him asking for it.

So, although Emmert helped by making the hires, it was more complicated than just giving him all the credit.

BK was a home run hire. Absolutely incredible to snatch a winning coach in his prime who was currently in a playoff season—from Notre Dame. BK was not on the radar of any fan, bc why would he be? But I’ll be damned if he isn’t the best qualified football coach hire ever at LSU. He will routinely compete for NCs and doubtlessly win at least one.

I’ve not been this excited about an LSU coach hire…ever.

I upvoted.

I re-read my post, and it was a little too glowing about Emmert. Bertman, as well as the Board and boosters, deserves plenty of credit.

The suggestion that Saban woke a sleeping giant is an oft-repeated fallacy that needs to die. The LSU administration changed directions. Saban was the beneficiary of that change, NOT the cause of it.

Spurrier was never going to come here after he left Florida. He wanted a shot at the nfl also. And Spurrier left UF after 2001 season, 3 years before saban departed for the nfl.

Our front office asked who’d saban recommend to hire to replace him. What other coach at the time would he recommend? Nutt wasn’t a bad coach for arky and it’s not like lsu was capable of stealing away a big name at that time like they just did with Kelly.
