I went on my first bear hunt with hounds this morning in Western NC. I know a guy who’s in a club that owns 10,000 acres and he let me come along. The bear the dogs got on didn’t run but a few hundred yards before deciding to sit down and fight instead. One of the dogs’ owners heard them getting hurt and bailed down the mountain by himself to kill the bear before any more got injured. The crazy bastard is known for walking up to within a few feet of the bears and shooting it point blank with his 30-30 (The balls on this guy!).

Turned out to be a 235 pound female, mean as hell. One dog had broken ribs and a few others had to get stapled up. One was taken to the vet with a tear around its arse. Last Monday, the bear they were after went into a den and hurt every dog that tried to go in after it, killing one. I guess that’s par for the course…

I didn’t get to see the dogs work like I hoped since the “race” was over so fast, but at least I went home with about 30 pounds of meat and some fat to render, and a good story.

If you ever get the opportunity to go, I highly recommend it. It’s unlike any other type of hunting I’ve experienced, and the guys who hunt with these hounds are extremely passionate about the dogs and the process. Hearing the dogs baying over the mountains and working closer and closer is exciting as hell, and now I understand why these guys dedicate their lives to it. I’m hooked, for sure.

Cool. Always fun to hunt with hounds.

That sounds like a good time. No hounds allowed for bear here in Arkansas.

Bears can carry trichinosis so make sure you cook the meat enough

I like hound hunting, but can't imagine hunting something that hurt my dogs so frequently

I was in the Helen Ga area few weeks back. Saw bear hunters all over with their dogs. They had a big camp setup and saw them daily on the roads and highways.
Even saw them in the woods one day. Had two dogs come by and later a guy looking for them. He said they had one bear earlier on the run but that’s all he said.

I hunt but never had the urge to bear hunt. Neat animals. Saw 9 hiking that week

I'd like to do it but I'm in the same boat as you as far as using my own dogs. Hell, I get worried as all get out when my cur is killing a coon.

Sounds like an awesome hunt. I'd buy the guy who let you come along a nice bottle of whiskey in hopes he'd invite again.

If he has 10,000 acres in W NC, he's probably set on whiskey.

Yeah, that's some rugged, steep terrain there. Beautiful, but rugged. If you flattened out that 10,000 acres like a table top, you would probably have more like 50,000 acres...or more.

Probably, but he said it was club land. Still, it's a nice gesture.

Not sure yet myself but the guys I was with said a bear burger will make you want throw out your deer. They also recommended stewing it in the crockpot. And the fat is supposed to be great for frying and baking

I’ve had quite a few negative encounters with bears in the Smokies and it motivated me to give it a try

I don’t think he drinks but I’m ordering some other gifts to be delivered to his house for sure. His family has hunted bear in this valley since the 1700s so I’m honored to have had him let me tag along

The highest points on the property are over 6000 ft in elevation so you’d be hard pressed to find more rugged wilderness on the east coast. It’s an insanely beautiful and terribly harsh place.

My cousin sent me this potato phone pic of a dead bear her neighbor kilt in Harlan County KY last weekend. Can't tell anything about it and she wouldn't get no closer. He's getting it stuffed.

Dogs will run the bears off and
Make the big males nocturnal.

They put out corn and peanuts every day, year round, to keep the bears near by.

Any bears becoming nocturnal isn’t an issue for hounds. They can track them regardless of when they’ve been moving around.
