Where does Hayes fit in now?

Obviously depth is very important. It’s a long season with injuries and rest no matter what so obviously there will be minutes for Hayes.
But with the team fully healthy, is there any real role for Hayes? All starters played right around 30 min which is where we will want them to be, more for the big 3 in tight games. Jonas played 27. Can’t imagine they will want it much less than that for him.
Nance played 21 and Murphy played 24. Again, those are both good but probably will trend higher rather than lower as we move through the season.
Alvarado at 16. Graham played 15. Naji played 14.
Where will Hayes minutes come from with the team healthy? Go bigger with less time for Graham/Naji?
I wasn’t really high on trading him this season unless a great deal was there but Im having a hard time seeing where he fits other than depth. I can’t imagine they would offer him a large contract to be depth. Unless Hayes improved greatly in the off-season, I think he gets dealt for shooting, and the hotter we start, the more likely it is to happen.

He still has a role as long as he's on the team. And I don't think they want to bench him completely in case there is any trade market.
He is an energy big and he showed in preseason he can run with 2nds and cause some mismatches.
You take a minute or two away from Zion, Jonas, Nance, and (more so) Naji and that gives you Jaxson minutes.
There are games where he could play more than Nance because of the matchup or pace of the game. I don't think there are a lot of games like that but I could see it from time to time.

I agree with you overall. I don’t think a deal would be there to improve the team enough to be worth giving up the depth.

Packaged with other Players, on another team.

Package him with Graham for an expiring contract and/or future pick

i agree with everything Bunchie said.
I'm ready to trade him this year for pretty much anything, but when he's healthy and engaged, he still gives us good minutes.
I think its interesting when you look at his +/- for each game last year, especially at the end of the year. His +/- was positive when it was a win and negative when we lost 30 of the last 36 games, playoffs included.
Does that mean he's impacting our wins and losses that much? I doubt it, and more like he's just along for the ride, but over those 30 games he was averaging 11.5ppg and 5.5rpg with a block, playing 26mpg and hitting 39% from 3.
If the team really thinks he affects winning as a bench player, and thinks he can become someone who might be able to close games for us, then he'll get a 3/$30 deal from us. But what is very likely to happen is no one wants to give us anything of value for him this year, no one wants to give him $10M/yr for multiple years in RFA, and we end up keeping him and signing him to basically a 1 year deal at $10M with the intent to trade him like we did with Hart, and just like what Orlando is experiencing with Mo Bamba.

I would think he takes those 14 minutes from naji. Gotta build that trade value somehow

Absolutely there is a spot for Hayes! He is the second Big on the 2nd unit.
Hayes and Nance or Hayes and Zion.
As good as we looked, we need a big with Jacksons Skill Set. He is a Switchable big with incredible athleticism

With everyone dialed in, I wonder if he's going to be as well. He's the only one that has had any real sort of off the court trouble, but he may be past that now. He seems very engaged and having fun on the sideline, but hopefully he's putting in as much work as he can to be the big boy addition we need as backup this season.

well he's always had his fun, the problem is he's more interested in the fun instead of working hard.

It depends on if we want to pay the tax.
We are -7.5 mil as of now without Jax.
If we trade Temple + Graham for no assets then we would have exactly 9.5 mil left. I’d imagine Jax would get just about all of that and we would still have to fill 2 roster spots.
I like him/ his potential a lot but I’m positive we can find someone to do what he does for cheaper. If he can come back shooting outside the paint efficiently or playing legit defense against centers then I’m all for it.

You have to think about how many times during an 82-game season that someone will be out. Hayes will be valuable to have in games where Nance, Jonas or Zion are out or need to rest.

I could be wrong but i remember hayes playing really well with zion 2 years ago. Id like to see that pairing again

great post altogether.
the clipped in bit says we are still in hope he grows into his best self mode.
this injury really messes with evaluation. based on the human element I would move him before he does something that makes him unmarketable.
I kinda doubt he's ever a great defender.
I think its likely he ends up being a decent to great 3 pt shooter. I want someone else to be the hopeful one. I feel like he's a time bomb. I need to walk away before the next mistake. I accept that he could really be needed due to JV or Zion injury.
keeping him for back up is a very cautious position.
id rather shoot for the moon. deal him and graham for a pick and matching money expiring filler. is it expected Liddell can play by playoffs?

Nance is pretty injury prone. And I’m sure Zion will miss some games. There will be mins for him.

Offensively yes, defensively not so much. Both Zion and Jax have looked a lot better on defense so far this year but that’s a big question as to if we keep him. If 1 of those 2 guys can handle centers in the game together it is a great matchup nightmare. If they are struggling/ lost/ getting in foul trouble early then it just won’t work.

My only question with Hayes is his rebounding. If he really shows up and rebound the ball at a high level, I think he can be on the court with any lineup. He's shown some glimpse but I want to see some consistency boxing out and on the boards.

Yeah I forgot about Liddell (for next year). Liddell is already supposed to be a good defender so if he can even end up being a PJ Tucker type player and Jax still can’t match up to centers then he isn’t needed.
We already have Val and Billy as our quality “just in case” player. I’d rather draft another project for cheaper and plug him in while saving the money we’d spend on Hayes.

Yep, I think Herb was the only starter to play 70+ games last season. The rest avg'd in the low 60s.
That's roughly 90 to 100 games needing to fill starting minutes, so that already requires about 1.25 people, not including the bodies needed to fill in for missing bench 2nd teamers.

We can’t ignore salary tho. Obviously he would be necessary if we have injuries. So would anyone else who we have on our team that would have to play when others are injured. The questions are would his contract put us in the tax, is that worth it, and can we find someone to replace him for less money?
Would his contract put us in the tax? Quite possibly.
Is it worth it to go into the tax for Jax with his primary use being important mainly if someone gets injured? No.
Could we replace him for less money and still find a serviceable backup if our main starters get injured? Yes.
