Joe’s Dreyfus Store

I am new to this board. I am a gator fan, but I love LSU…. ever since I met some folks there who really showed us a good time.
That little restaurant, ten miles west of Baton Rouge, gave its customers New Orleans food at bayou pricing. It is closed, now. But a group of friends would drive from Tyler TX regularly. Joe’s Dreyfus Store was a stop on my honeymoon.
Does anyone remember Joe’s Dreyfus Store?

Remember it well. Located in Livonia and some of the best turtle soup I've ever had. If you're ever back in the area, Not Yo Mama's has very good groceries

I loved Joe's!
The family of a good friend of mine growing up had a camp on False River. A few other friends and I would get invited out for weekends on the river and we would always get treated to lunch or dinner at Joe's Dreyfus Store.
Passed by the sign last Christmas on our drive from Baton Rouge to DFW and got all kinds of nostalgic.
Sad to hear it has closed, it was a great spot.

I remember as a kid my parents would take my sister and me there and we would stay at the B&B next door for a quick weekend trip.
I have a memory of them having incredible peach cobbler.
I also remember being bored as hell when we weren’t eating because there was nothing else to do.

The original owners, Joe and Diane, are family of my husband's. I spent many special occasions there. It was an incredible restaurant. Joe was a wonderful chef. He did cook at a restaurant or two in NOLA. (Christmas dinner at their house was not to be missed.) The avocado salad, catfish etouffee, oysters brochette, Red Barn crunch or cheesecake for dessert...I miss it all.
Before they moved into the Dreyfus Store, they had the Red Barn. People would sit out on their cars in the parking lot waiting for their table because the restaurant was so small. Customers made the drive from Baton Rouge without a thought.
I still have a menu framed on my kitchen wall.

What is red barn crunch? Just curious.

It was just layered toffee and chocolate (essentially a homemade Heath bar with a better chocolate to toffee ratio) crushed and served over vanilla bean ice cream.

Shed a small tear when I first heard that it was closing down.

Yup. I grew up in North LA ... we ate there all the time traveling back and forth from LSU games and visiting family in South LA. Hate it closed, was a great spot in a rural area.

The crawfish bisque was so good. We used to buy pints and quarts to take home for the freezer.
I was crushed when it closed.
