Yeah, hugely broad category. Some more specificity would be great.
I'm currently enjoying my listen of Thomas Jefferson: A Biography of Spirit and Flesh. It's very interesting, in that it explores the complexity of Jefferson's spiritual views and how those played out in Jefferson's morals and decisions.
So, it's not really about Jefferson's accomplishments in writing the Declaration or completing the Louisiana Purchase. It's a more focused biography.

I’d like to cover the early colonies up until the civil war, for starters. I searched through this forum after I made this post (sorry, should have done that first) and it seems that everyone agrees on the Oxford series. I think I’ll start that and probably read a few related books after each one. Thanks for the suggestions!

Gotham and Caro’s LBJ and Robert Moses books

Robert Remini has several good books on the Jacksonian Age (1815-1845)

Look up Oxford History of the United States. The series is ongoing, but so far has about 10 books covering the revolution up to 9/11. Multiple entries have won pulitzers.
I have personally read The Glorious Cause by Middlekauff and What Hath God Wrought by Howe. Strongly recommend both and I always keep meaning to keep going through the series.
* I see you already mentioned the series, so consider this yet another recommendation.

Hopefully Caro finishes the LBJ series soon, he’s getting up there in age.
