Robot mowers: what do you know?

I feel down a rabbit hole the other night into robot mowers. Some of the newer ones can handle over and acre of cutting.
A pair of them, one covering the front and one covering the back would leave me with the house manicured and the rest easily hit with the tractor.
Does anyone have any experience?
Essentially square yard in the front with not obstacles. Back yard has a dozen or so large trees.

Buying two and still having to use the tractor doesn’t sound like it’s worth it.
I see them often in the neighborhoods around me and all of their lawns look good. Not sure about a big lot like you’re talking, though.

Have seen them demo’d and they’re impressive, wonder how long they would last though

I can barely get my robot vacuum to clean the house without sucking up some of the kids bullshite.

I had a an older worx landroid mower. Setting up the boundary wire and maintaining it was kind of a chore. It got broken a few times, and finding that break was a hassle. Ants/moisture got into my charging base and corroded the wires. Took forever to get a replacement in stock,so I was without the mower for 1 season. Once I got the base from Worx, warranty expired on the mower. One of the wheel gears is now jacked up, so it doesn't move very far without getting stuck. Went to undo the plug and the wires snapped at the transformer.
Conclusion — It was great when first installed and it actually ran, bit truly maybe got 2 seasons out of it. I'd love to have another, but no interest in going back with Landroid.

I had an older Worx for 3 or 4 years. It worked pretty good while I had it. Never had any boundary wire problems after initial install, which took an afternoon (big yard). I moved while I owned it and reinstalled wire in new yard, and it went much quicker the second time.
It did not play nice with obstacles (lots of kid toys in my case), but man was it nice to have the yard cut all the time my kids wanted to go out to play. I also have a large dog, and it would slice the top off the poo mountains
After 34d or 4th year, the screen stopped working, so i couldn't control it. Then i nicked the charging wire on the base with weed eater, and it never would work right after I fixed the wire.
I got mine for a steal at the time (like $600). If I see one in that range, I'll get another. The newer ones look like they have better obstacle avoidance and they're app conrolled. Also I think they map now and make sure to cut the whole yard rather than just go around randomly like mine did.

I saw a few videos of stihl models that had traveled 25+ million feet covered.
Not bad.

My next door neighbor has had one for about a year for his front yard. No idea if he uses it in the back also or how that works.
All I know is its quiet as shite and I walk out my front door about once a week and flinch at the fricking thing thinking its a damn dog or something. Our yards aren't that close together but his Jeeps usually parked in the driveway so I don't see it until its past the jeep

We install the Stihl ones. Wire are prone to getting damaged, can be expensive to find/repair bad lines (100+ each time a repair needs to be done, unless you do it yourself). They are pretty damn good though for 95% of people.

they never work as advertised
batteries go bad way faster then advertised
they never cut as good as advertised
if you are rich, and dont mind wasting money, they are cute toys to play around with

If they had a machine that would weed eat for you, I'd pay whatever it costs. I don't mind mowing since I have a ZTR, but those afternoon showers mixed with weekend rainouts have my grass really high by the time I cut sometimes. It would be nice to set that thing to run a couple of times a week in the back yard while I'm at work. I would just worry about someone stealing it in the front.

Do you need wires if only using it within a fully fenced yard?

I’d wait for RTK technology coming out in robot mowers. No wires, no antenna on your property, can be reprogrammed if layout changes. Pretty cool stuff coming down the road.

I enjoy the robot vacuums. I'm not sure I'm ready to give his big brother knives.

There were rumors of an EGO version that you could mark the boundry by pushing the mower around the yard (It was said to have a detachable handle) and then it would stay within that path. That would be a game changer IMO. Wires are for the birds.
