I have admittedly only seem some of his stuff.
Always wondered if it was his skill or just being John Wayne that propelled him into legendary status.

for the time he made movies/shows yes. for today's times, he would likely be considered ok - just due to so many better actors now.

Did someone hurt you as a child?

Not really. I would say he was the Keanu Reeves of his day. Nobody wants to admit that though.
Same thing film in film out. Most of the time he didn’t even put in the best performance of the film he was featured in.

Go watch The Searchers or The Shootist or True Grit or Rio Bravo and tell me Wayne wasn't a good actor when he wanted to be.

I wouldn’t say he was bad. Just okay. I’m a fan of big Jake, I like that one a lot.
And, like I said earlier, he doesn’t even put on the best performance in that film.

John Wayne was excellent at playing John Wayne. And there is nothing wrong with that.

He could deliver when needed. For the vast majority of his career he was "John Wayne" and could carry an entire movie just by walking through it.
I can watch the Rio Bravo/El Dorado/Rio Lobo trilogy on a loop. And The Cowboys always hits me in the gut.

Pretty much this.

He won an oscar for True Grit and was outstanding in The Searchers, Rio Bravo, and The Shootist. He just played similar characters, but he did so very well.

Shootist, Searchers and Quiet Man....nuff said.

Wayne was a movie star... Perhaps The movie stars of all movie stars. He was larger than life. He had maybe the greatest screen presence ever.
Thats what made him truly great but he was also underrepresented as an actor just because he played such similar parts in so many films.
However, Robert Duvall, who for my money is the best actor of the last 50 years, said Wayne could be a great actor when he wanted. That's all I need to hear.

Add The man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Sands of Iwo Jima

He was very limited. Occasionally he would find a great script that fit him to a tee. He could play John Wayne better than anybody.

Even today he is a great actor the same way Sam Elliot is a great actor. In his movies, he is great. Go watch Quiet Man, that was a great example of his range.

When you say only seen some of his stuff what have you seen? Also are you from another country? Why didn't your Dad introduce you to all of the greatness of The Duke?

He could act. See The Searchers, The Shootist and True Grit.
His job just usually didn't call for much "acting".
So, a short list:
Stagecoach
Fort Apache
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Rio Grande
The Quiet Man (NOTE: Non-western period piece)
The Searchers
Rio Bravo
The Sons of Katie Elder
Big Jake
True Grit
The Shootist
(ETA: Yes, add Sands of Iwo Jima, for sure)
If you have seen all of these, check back with us with an informed opinion of your own.
