That makes sense.
FWIW I am only speaking in this thread about my experience with my employees over 7 years and to our industry. It's fairly easy for me to outline their jobs and my expectations and let them do their jobs. They call me for anything they can't handle alone.

China is pretty much done as the manufacturing center of the world. Between the west decoupling over their covid lockdowns, geopolitical concerns, and the population bomb, China will cease to be the workshop of the world in the very near future.
The US is going to bring back as much as they can, a lot will go to Mexico, and maybe other Latin American countries, but it'll have to be re-located to more stable spheres of influence.
SE Asia and Asia in general is totally fooked in the coming years and a lot of their younger generations are going to be blindsided by the collapse given prosperity from the teet of globalism has been all they've known. Their normal was always abnormal.

I am 50/50 on it. I guess it depends on the position. If it is a task-based job it's going to be a little harder to show ambition. If it is a job outlined where you have some freedom to perform and go above then yes I agree.

My take on WFH, is we should allow as much WFH as possible, but I think there's a lot of people who have no business working from home that are whining about not being able to wfh.

Silicon Valley also has some of the highest RE costs in the country/world. It was smart to have HQ there during the tech boom but people across the country can code now. No reason to be paying someone 300k to do basic code and force the to work in San Francisco. You cns pay the same guy a quarter of that and they can do it in their mother's basement in Shreveport and probably do it better.

I've worked from home for years. I'm in a sales-managerial role that takes me all over the country and sometimes outside. There is no office to go to. I resell stuff that is made in ten different places.
There are huge pros and huge cons. I hate not being able to look my coworkers in the eye once a week and read their body language without a flight and a few nights in a hotel. You think office politics are petty when folks are all in the same room, but they can be way worse when we never see each other.

This is how I feel.
I also don't want to work WFH forever, personally. It just works the best for my life these days. In 5-7 years or so, I won't mind at all being back in an office.
I think our world is technologically advanced enough that it just makes zero sense to force people into an office "just because". If you can retain a good worker if it means letting them WFH and being able to pick their kid up at 3 from school while saving $1,000/month on childcare....then that is a no-brainer.

At what point does it stop being about ambition and more about management like you wanting free labor?
Folks don’t have a problem being ambitious. Folks do have a problem with masking getting overworked and underpaid as “going over and above”.

I think what a lot of companies are beginning to realize, even the tech companies, is that you really can't fully digitize the equivalent of in-person contact and interaction.
Even with corporations that rely on video-chat services for their product like multi-billion dollar news networks you'll see live feeds freeze and glitch.
We have a lot of tech to do a lot more in terms of working with others via WFH, but it's obvious it doesn't replace everything you get from working in the office. Even companies like Google and Facebook are admitting this. It stifles creativity and your ability to work off others when coming up with solutions if your job is in that sphere....
A code monkey? Wfh
A legal consultant? Wfh
Accountant? Wfh
Data analysis? Wfh unless you're building some sort of data analysis tool which requires teamwork.
