Seeing billboards advertising The Second Baptist Church in Houston. The sign says “The Church “Woke” Awake” and the Woke part is slashed through it. So it’s meant to read “The Church Awake”

Help me explain what this means. I really have no clue.

I’m new to Houston so give me the benefit of the doubt. I am also a Christian Protestant and have no recollection of a connection to a bible verse or normal statement where this would make sense.

Is this just straight up “anti-woke” sentiment?

ETA: this is not a statement of my woke/anti-woke sentiment. That’s not the point. Just surprises me to see it if it means what I think it means

If you don't know what it means to be "awake" now, then you obviously are still sleeping.

Ed Young gave an address 1.5 months-ish ago. Calling for people to take a close look at how Harris County is operating.

Never mentioned D or R, the media pounced on it called the Feds to investigate

this is the way a mega church gives the middle finger

Plenty of scripture referencing awakening

Ephesians
14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

m“Awake, O sleeper,

and narise from the dead,

and oChrist will shine on you.

Isaiah

14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

m“Awake, O sleeper,

and narise from the dead,

and oChrist will shine on you.”

17  pWake yourself, wake yourself,

stand up, O Jerusalem,

qyou who have drunk from the hand of the LORD

the cup of his wrath,

who have drunk to the dregs

the bowl, rthe cup of staggering.

The Lord’s Coming Salvation

52 cAwake, awake,

put on your strength, O Zion;

dput on your beautiful garments,

O Jerusalem, ethe holy city;

ffor there shall no more come into you

the uncircumcised and the unclean.

This Church is right by my house. I see this sign all the time and it confuses me too. I think they're trying to say that they are traditional in values but it's a weird way to express it. I think they're trying to appeal to the conservative, non-woke church seeker.

You’re obviously missing OP’s point. The grammar is blatantly incorrect.

If it happens in the twinkle of an eye, does it matter if you are awake?

2 Timothy 3

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

This is exactly the message. Dr. Young has directed the message right at the church and Christians.

He is telling Christians to wake up and don't fall into a culture that will corrupt you, your family, and society.

And that’s an awesome message. The church does need to wake up and realize what going on society and set themselves up for the future coming of Christ. No doubt.

I just don’t understand the delivery in the billboard.

Second Baptist has been doing a sermon series on the topic of "wokeness" and how much of what is in modern culture clashes with a Biblical worldview. He announced that he intends to continue this series through Election Day. I've been following it when I can.

In his first sermon the pastor (Dr. Ed Young) mentioned that Houston was more dangerous than New Orleans. That week the Mayor called to complain. The following week he quoted FBI statistics which proved his point.

His son (Ed Jr. at Fellowship Church in DFW) has also done a similar series. And Dr. Jack Graham at Prestonwood (full disclosure: that's where I'm a member) did a two-week series on that subject.

Ed Young is the pastor and he absolutely excoriated our Mayor. The Mayor got pissy and asked for an interview. Ed Young refused and doubled down on it in her sermon

He has zero fricks to give
