northwest Arkansas is a very nice place to live.
"The Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area passed Austin, Texas, to claim the No. 4 spot in the U.S. News & World Report's annual "Best Places to Live" survey released today." US News Ranking July 2021
If you disagree meet me at Sonic with your fly rod

I know this site attracts a certain demographic of people but not everyone is a white male republican that is completely fine with eating Texas Roadhouse and sausage biscuits from Twice Daily every day.
I’m sure Northwestern Arkansas is beautiful but I just have zero desire to live in a place that birthed Walmart my guy.

Tennessee, Florida, and Texas are the top 3. Put them in whatever order you want depending on weather preference. Then a HUGE drop to Rest.

Strange thread. I've lived in Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Florida, and Louisiana.
I loved all of them, but Louisiana and Tennessee were particularly good to me. If I can retire near my family in Madisonville, False River, or even parts of Lafayette....I'll die a happy man. I also would love to retire in Tampa or St. Pete area in Florida too.
Now Louisiana usually has the worst state government of the ones I've lived in. Tennessee was the most dangerous (I was in Memphis). Texas had the worst COL. Georgia (Atlanta) had the worst traffic and the biggest assholes. And the people I knew my age in Florida were just not really like me.
But they were all positive experiences despite that.
Notable call outs:
Texas had an incredible economy and just mountains of opportunity for an ambitious person.
Louisiana's food and culture are incredible, and the people are awesome. It's the most entertaining state.
Tennessee was a well run state, and the area where I lived was super friendly.
Georgia was pretty - especially Augusta during Masters week. That state is attracting a lot of people from the mid Atlantic and northeastern US because of Atlanta's growth and success.
Florida had some surprisingly awesome food and you can't beat those beaches anywhere else in the south.

Louisiana and Mississippi are by far the worst. Anything in the Delta is at the bottom. Arkansas and Missouri are both beautiful states.

IDK. I absolutely love south Louisiana.
I haven't lived in Mississippi, but in some ways I think it's secretly the best state in the south. In other ways, it's a tragic mess.

Alabama Pros - Very pretty in a lot of areas, small but great coast along with beautiful coastal area towns of Fairhope and Daphne, nice hilly / mountain terrain in the northern half of the state, Birmingham has incredible suburbs where 80% of the population live
Fairhope/daphne are huge outliers for alabama. Fairhope is a nice town in just about any state. It’s just an unusual spot from the topography to social.
Mountain brook is a great suburb of bham.
Otherwise, the state is just not that great.
Also, the corruption in alabama is horrible. They have more jailed governors than we do.

Because you don't leave your camp to see the rest of the world. Because if you did, you'd see how bad Louisiana is compared to the rest of the country.

This has pretty much the consensus here.
If you remove bias, it's pretty hard to argue otherwise.

Interesting how the US News rankings stack up against the OTs. Granted, it's all so subjective.

I really don’t see how y’all can hold so much praise for a state with Memphis and overpriced hot fried chicken to such a high standard lol?

Mississippi is probably the best state if you want to live a cheap, quiet life on a farm or in a small town. Also helps if you are buying land, I think they have the cheapest land out of any southern state.
If you want to live in a quiet suburb that is still nice Madison seems like a great place too.
Mississippi is definitely underrated. It’s basically Alabama with slightly less to do but a lot cheaper.

The MS, LA, and AR delta areas need to be combined and tuned into the 51st state, everybody would be better off.
Nah it needs to be turned into an exclave like Lesotho in South Africa. Nobody wants that shite…

Ranking a state is like ranking a country. What good does it do you that you live in the USA if you are in New Orleans East?
I live in Old Metairie within a three minute walk of restaurants, bars and shops. It's friggin awesome! I don't care how bad other parts of Louisiana might be.
