So do Mantises bite?
If they can get their mouth through your skin
They are no danger to humans though

Even seemingly benign bugs like lady bugs are vicious indiscriminate killers and cannibals. There's a whole micro war for survival going on at that level.
Ladybugs are cool as shite.
Here's the larvae form which voraciously feeds on aphids:
An older larvae or two will usually hang around eggs to protect them from predation. The adult Ladybugs lay the eggs and one of their older "children" guards them. They work together:
Larvae hatching. You can also see a Yellow Aphid in this pic:
Here's a larvae farther along in its lifecycle:
And after it shed and became an adult:
Just to complete the cycle, here are two Ladybugs trying to frick:
That vine they are on was covered in Yellow Aphids. The weather was perfect for Aphids last Summer, and as a result there were tons of Ladybugs and Green Lacewings out and about.

Great thread. I’ve always had a water garden to attract dragonflies. They look like little helicopters and their larvae eat mosquito larvae in the pond.

Love the mantis. Also enjoy observing the black and yellow garden spiders when they come around.
ETA:
Jumping spiders are also the bomb.

Check out more of KLR's stuff. Most are really good.

That's really a fascinating sequence. Thank you for your reply.

The velvet ant also known as the cow killer ant. It’s a wingless wasp that kills ants. I had one in my yard for a couple of summers and never had an ant until my mother in law visited and decided to kill it.

They are ridiculously hard to kill and their sting is painful as hell. I can remember stomping on one over and over as a kid and the thing just wouldn’t die.

I don't think I have a favorite. All bugs fascinate me. I love taking pictures of them too.

Your pictures are SO much better than mine. That caterpillar one is awesome.
Yes, bugs are fascinating. The are these cool little alien creature who live in a world we can’t fathom.

this is a great thread
where are y’all getting the mantis egg sacs? I’d love to hatch some in my wildflower gardens there’d be plenty to eat.
right now the most frequent visitors are about five different bumblebee types, dragonflies, butterflies and moths but also tons of pollinating flies. I have a massive golden orb weaver set up next to one of them, she’s about 6 inches long. Top of the food chain

I was able to order some off Amazon years back. Also nurseries sometimes have them.
I always used mantids, ladybugs and earthworms as beneficial members of my garden. Tried to avoid using pesticides
