What’s the best way to know if a neighborhood is good?

Looking at houses in Houston area. What should I look for while I drive around to look at houses? To be specific I’m looking to avoid bad neighbors and select a more safe area.

I heard if near a Home Depot it’s a middle class area

Correct. And if it’s near a prison it’s not a good area.

What kind of shape are the houses and yards in? What do the cars look like? Do you see a lot of aftermarket rims?

Are there kids playing in the street on school days?

Drive by there around 7PM on a Fri and Saturday evening. Are they grilling in the front yard?

See if the grocery carts are put away. If not, run away!

General upkeep of the lawn and property. Keep in mind that not everyone is a “garden of the month club” wannabe, but still, look for red flags.

Pass by the property during the evening and late night hours. Is there any commotion or late night partying?

Quantity of cars that come and go, and condition of said cars. Is it a group of illegal aliens who are cramming 30 people in a 2 bedroom house?

I live in Memphis but there’s a Flemings and Ruth’s Chris nearby so that is a sign

Never heard that but could be spot on.

What I do know if a Wal-Mart is really close, the place is either bad or will be bad soon.

Flemings sucks.

Proximity to private schools can also often be a good measurement.

Look for cars parked all over the street. Major indication of trash.

Make sure the neighborhood has a variety of homes (1500-4000 sq ft). If all homes are less than 2500 sq ft, look elsewhere.

Look at the schools.

The Home Depot in New Orleans is surrounded by some of the worst and most violent ghetto in America.
