Super hero movies have gotten old. And most are pretty bad.

A few of them hold up well. There is one in particular that does so, by yours's truly, Zack Snyder...

And this is the guy they chose to direct a superman movie.

May explain why I enjoyed it over the other versions - it was edgy and wasn't Superman. I never liked superman as a character. He was a lame boy scout. Man of Steel fixed that.
Those who hated Man of Steel are totally justified.

Too bad we don't have more scenes like this:

As long as they have audiences paying to go see them and they turn a profit they will still be made no matter how bad they get!! Seems oversaturated but the audience is still there

Yeah, sad but true. Some of them are decent, like Spiderman 2, Watchmen, or the Dark Knight. But most of them are forgettable schlock. Most of the MCU is unwatchable for me. Same with the DCEU. It's a mess overall.

Why do you think that is?

I’ll give you that there are some MCU movies that aren’t very good, along with some that are pretty vastly overrated. But for the most part they are competent and enjoyable. And the overarching story they tell us pretty damn good. And the culmination of like 15+ years of films into A:IW and A:E are pulled off about as perfectly as anybody could have hoped for.

Hell, out of the (I think) four Avengers movies, three of them (first and last two) are arguably in the top five comic movies of all time. And along the way you have really solid entries. And for the most part they are perfectly cast as well.

I get that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but at the very least they are solid entertainment at worst.

And there are some really good ones outside of the MCU as well (Spider-Man 2, X men 2, Blade trilogy, a handful of Batmans, Supermans, etc).

Infinity war is so good. The best one easily. End game has some issues. I’m watching it right now. It’s a bit convenient. But the setup is almost always better than the payoff.

There's a few that are good. The rest are just repetitive. The Captain America series was mostly just solid action. The others are largely like watching video game sequences with a few acting bits. Once in a while, it's ok can be fun. Double digits of these things every year? Yawn.

Here's a video that explains my grievances with the MCU:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R_RKS7n4SI

But if you want a shorter answer, I can't stand the same, repetitive formula they use for each film, the same quips in every story, and a lack of overall stakes (barely anyone dies).

IW wasn't as bad as End Game and it's obvious that End Game was a pile of shite. Thanos was a step up as an antagonist (when compared to your typical mcu antagonist) and they ruined him in Endgame. They undid everything from the previous film (IW), this making consequences non-existence. The snydercut did the same crap with flash reversing time.

They don't appeal to me. They feel too much like sitcom episodes over the mythological epics they're supposed to be (super heroes are inspired by mythology).
Yeah, they use the same, basic plot structure for every story:

I never said it was bad. In fact, I said I enjoyed it more than the other superman movies. It had some writing flaws, but it was preferable to your average mcu flick. It just wasn't a superman flick. That character wasn't superman. That was what appealed to me - since I never liked superman as a character.

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Ironman

Snyder’s Watchmen was almost frame-by-frame the comic book, yet he somehow still managed to miss the mark.

I agree with Infinity War. I can see the argument for Endgame, but no way on the 1st Avengers. Not all time at least. It's mid tier for Endgame and before MCU. I've always viewed it as the worst Avengers movie and one of the most overrated in the entire MCU.

Gun to my head without giving much thought to it... The Dark Knight, Infinity War, Batman Begins, Watchmen and Sin City. If Sin City doesn't count, then probably Batman (1989) or Iron Man.

All of those are great.

Superman (Christopher Reeve) really kicked it off and is one of the greats.
Batman (Keaton) kind of re-jumpstarted the whole genre. Also terrific.

Thank god The Batman was just released to remind us that these movies don't have to suck or be formulaic. The Joker was yet another great reminder for some of the same reasons. So while "Marvel" is on balance better than the DC movies (which were mostly dreadful), I don't think they have anything approaching Joker or The Batman.

I'll also agree with the OP. The Watchmen was pretty bad arse. I was completely unfamiliar with the source material and thought it was very good. Can't believe this same guy fumbled the DC Universe.

Joker just felt like a poor man's taxi driver/king of comedy. It wasn't a bad film, but it certainly felt derivative of superior works. I didn't care for it. It also felt like that Phoenix film you were never really here.

I haven't watched the Batman and don't plan on doing so. I'm just burned out from these superhero movies (and the prioritization of profit and political preaching over good storytelling).

I only watched it because it was on HBO Max and expected not to like it. I was really impressed. They had me at Nirvana.

Compared to the MCU films, absolutely. I prefer it over the other superman movies. It's a breath of fresh air when it comes to not throwing in a million quips.

But pacing is problematic - the first half of the film is about Clark's origin and the second half is non-stop fight scenes. Clark doesn't change as a character either. He's a flat character. Not automatically bad, but he did lack a sense of personality.

Absolutely. I was happy to finally see a Superman who kicked arse and wasn’t campy.

Fair enough. It wasn’t perfect but I liked it a lot.

I'm a huge comic nerd, so its still pretty cool to see the characters I grew up reading on the big screen.

With that being said, I refuse to watch any of the upcoming DC movies until they get their shite together.

I'm getting tired of the D+ shows. Pacing is shite and the villians have been terrible. They give each episode such a short running time and they try to cram as much as they can in an episode. Netflix actually did it better.

With the MCU, by the time Secret Wars comes out 3 years from now, I'll probably be over it, which sucks because now that the X-Men, and other characters are coming, it's going to get interesting, but there is just too much at this point.
