Just saw this for the first time. Really enjoyed the 2003 remake with Biel and a few others were ok. The original? Complete trash. Am I missing something? Really bad actors, slow as shite, and not scary. Very retarded.

That's like criticizing the Wright Brothers plane. Gory horror films didn't even exist before this.

I guess I get why if you are fairly young, growing up on modern gore porn, you might not get it.
But to completely dismiss it and it’s place in horror movie history shows just how ignorant you really are.

You have to watch it within the context of the time period in which it was made to appreciate its position within the horror film canon.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is the greatest horror film ever made.
You are simply incorrect.

Yes. Yes you are. The John Laroquette narration in the beginning hooked me from the start. And it was well before you could simply Google to find out if the narration was true. And it was shocking for its time even though there wasn't much gore in the movie. To me, this movie, along with Halloween, Black Christmas, and the Exorcist in the 70s set the standard of what was to come.

You’re wrong and to any further debate:

If Chicken installed a block feature, you would be near the top of the list

TCM Part 2 was the best. I loved that one.

Part of what makes it great is the grittiness of the filming. I saw it for the first time when I was about 10 in 1983. Having grown up in Shreveport, I was very familiar with a lot of the small towns in northeast Texas where this was supposed to have taken place. The movie did a great job of capturing what these small communities were like in the 70’s and even early 80’s. This coupled with the fact that it was not monsters or ghosts or aliens but regular people is what made it so scary to me.

If you want fake slasher films, then love the reboots. Not a fan of slasher films...but 70s slasher films are about as visceral as you can get.
You complain its not scary? Most slasher films aren't. They're mostly gore.
Its a cheap version of the horror genre...but you can't get more crazy creepy than the middle of buttfrick Texas in the 1970s when writers and directors had full authority. It almost feels like you're on the ground watching a doc. 70s films pushed the edge, the likes we haven't seen since.

I watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time a few months ago, and I was pretty impressed with it. (I had just watched Lifeforce and that made me want to see more by the director. All I'd seen before was Poltergeist.)
When the horror actually starts in TCM, it's understated in a way that makes it really effective. The killing is quick and matter-of-fact instead of "cinematic," and I think that makes a big difference.
