Rear end went out on it at the end of last season. Just bought another bike. The 300's motor is still strong and tranny shifts ok. Should I replace the rear end and axle bearing or should I just bite the bullet and scrap it. Leaning towards the rebuild but have no experience doing it.

Fix it or bring it to someone who can. You’re looking at ballpark $350 for a aftermarket rear diff. If you need a axle about $120ish.

Scrap and put on curb, but tell me first ;)

Fix it, best 4-wheeler ever, well worth the expense!

I bought this 1988 2WD last year from a friend for $500. It was running fine but needed a little TLC.

I replaced the plastics and muffler and repainted/straightened the bumpers and racks. I also added LED headlights, tail light and light bar and added a front end lift/level kit. It had an aftermarket carb so I replaced that with an OEM carb and it runs like a top.

Considering the fact that I had no idea what I was doing (Thanks YouTube!) I thought it turned out great. And it runs like a top. I don't plan on ever selling it.

I’d rebuild but there is one part of the rebuild on diff. that requires a special tool. Plus the correct rebuild also requires color coding/marking/aligning of gears. I did everything but those two and had Honda so the rest and it was not expensive.

Axle bearings are easy to replace.

Go look up D-Ray Smith shop on YouTube. This guy has made me a believer I can repair my ATVs. His videos have taught me a bunch in regards to repairs.

TRX300 is one he features the most on. He has a final drive repair video for it.

Very nice, I like.

Would you mind sharing where you got the new plastics and about how much it ran you?

I ordered the front plastics (part # 61100-HC4-672ZA) from BikeBandit.com. Partzilla is another good option or was when I was doing the restoration. I could not find a new OEM rear fender and I don't know that you'll be able to. I ended up order the Maier brand and it looks and fits fine with some minor fastener modifications.

I also orders decals from LINK and they are identical to OEM. Overall it was a really fun project.

I listed mine on FB marketplace this weekend, but had to pull it off today. Went to rode it one last time before a buyer showed up, and the rear diff went to clunking. Not sure I wanna drop the price and sell as is, so may order a new rear end and swap em out. I've heard the needle bearing or some shite is hard to mess with while doing a rebuild.

I plan on buying a complete rear end. I have a manual for the bike but i can't tell how many bearings are needed other than the two that come with the differential.

LINK

Not sure if you’ll be able to view that link but it will be the brake side parts break down. You won’t need bearings for the rear diff if you buy a complete one. Just a bearing for the brake side along with seals.

Thats what i thought the diagram showed. I'll just get those parts and clear a place in the shop and start tearing it down. I hope nothing else needs changing.

What he says is true.
Last one I did had to cut it in half with a dremel to get it out.
