What's the deal with watches? Is there a watch exchange or something? Do they gain value enough to make it worth paying $10k+ for?

I have an apple watch and didn't by the newest one because I thought the one I got was a lot to pay for a watch.

I won Kenneth Cole watch in a poker game, it stopped working a few months after I won it. I'll sale it if anyone wants it.

If you buy a Rolex sport model at retail, it won’t lose value over time. High end watches are heirloom level - they can be handed down for generations if taken care of. Problem the last few years is that many people were too impatient to wait for a watch at retail, and have lost money buying watches on the secondary market. You’ll generally see secondary/private sales on the Omega and Rolex forms, as well as Reddit and Facebook (in addition to Chrono24 and other sites). The Chrono24 prices are inflated.

As mentioned earlier, brands like Omega tried to cash in on the frenzy by requiring their dealers not to discount (whereas in the past you’d get 25% discounts easily). This won’t last- they produce too many watches.

What's the consensus on Strumenti Nautici?

I'm really really really novice at this.

Forget the Rolex crash,I see a Breguet Type XX on Chrono 24 for less than 5k and a JLC Polaris for under 7k.

So many are fixated on the Rolex brand and do not even realize (or care) better watches can be purchased for these inflated prices.

Feverishly paying more for less.

I'm finding myself more and more drawn to the Glashutte Original Panorama Date. Beautiful watch and very reasonably priced compared to other brands of similar or even lesser quality.

Legit question, but maybe a dumb one...where do you take advantage of the cratering luxury watch market? It doesn't seem to be tanking on rolexforums, swisswatches, davidsw, etc.

Wouldn’t know. A watch is probably around 1,452nd on a list of things I don’t need or really want but may get 1 anyway just because I might use it one day. A diamond studded ankle bracelet would be 1,453rd

Ellick and Monroe used to have Rolex ADs. They're really scaled back their footprint.

With little fanfare, Glashutte Original released a new watch this week. I continue to be impressed with them

Omega released something along the lines of a mechanical smartwatch today

quote:

A FIRST OF ITS KIND CALIBRE OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 1932 is a world’s first and the most complicated movement the brand has ever launched. A fully integrated chronograph and minute repeater, destined to rewrite the watchmaking rulebook. Not a reinvention or a modification – completely new. A movement made by hand, able to chime elapsed times, thanks to a mechanical “brain”, which merges its functions and senses which to engage.
