Thirteen Lives: The Ron Howard movie a/b the Thai cave rescue; dumped on Prime streaming?

I watched this movie last night and thought it was one of the best new movies I've seen in awhile. I could honestly see Howard getting best director Oscar buzz, but for whatever reason Amazon decided to put it straight to streaming instead of putting it in theaters after they bought MGM.
Seriously recommend it. It has Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen and a very solid Thai cast. Very well made, respectably restrained performances from the leads, and it does a good job of showing how everyone has a role in the rescue.
And cave diving is something I hope to never experience in my life.

Curious about this after watching the Woke+ documentary about it, which I thought was extremely well done. Interested how close they stay to the real story, assuming the doc was historically accurate.

What about that documentary was woke?
The documentary was better than the movie, I would suggest watching the documentary first and then the movie. The documentary was great much like Free Solo where you know what happens but are still on the edge of your seat. The movie is still good.

Yeah the National Geographic documentary had lots of actual video from the real event. I can’t imagine the movie holding a candle to it… but will watch!

Nothing about the documentary. I was referring to the streaming service it is on. I have seen it and found it enthralling. I'll never forget the doctor describing how he felt knocking a child unconscious and then pushing their heads underwater, felt like he was euthanizing them. Just an unbelievable story end to end.

It was in theaters for a week before the streaming release. Not sure the point of that.

I thought it was a great movie.
The rescue of those kids has to be one of the greatest human achievements in modern times, perhaps qualified by some factor.

I listened to a podcast on this the other day. I might watch the movie tonight. It's wild they they sedated those kids so they could safely move them through the water. What a ballsy move. Crazy idea that they weren't all that confident would work, but they didn't really see another way. And it worked.

Watched both over the weekend.
The Rescue doc was better than the movie.
But they did a great job making the movie look almost identical to the real footage.

I watched this over the weekend. Very emotional movie. I cried several times just thinking about the overall stress everyone was under. Incredible story. And that smallest boy- the last one to go- my God I cried the most over him. Trying to find a mask small enough for him got me in the feels big time.
And the rice farmers. They gave up their crops to save these kids.

I think in order to be nominated for awards it has to have a theatrical release.

I'm pretty sure you are correct. Went back at some nominated Netflix movies and they all had a limited release.

Yeah if you watched The Rescue documentary first then you won’t get the same effect from the movie as OP. The movie is pretty true to the actual events so the doc is a complete spoiler for the movie. The doc did a good job itself of keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The best movie I have seen in a long time. Really nice to watch something so close to reality. Underwater scenes were unbelievably done. Definitely agree on your Best Director Oscar buzz. Refreshing to watch something without Comic super heros, wizards, dragons, spells, space fantasies , etc.

Good movie, you couldn’t pay me 5 million a year to cave dive. I got claustrophobic and nervous just watching these guys

Agreed. I watched it last night. It was entertaining and viggo and colin turned in admirable performances. But best director buzz…. Ehh not so much.

Good/great movie. Unbelievable story.
They really set the mood when Viggo is bringing out the adult who got cutoff by the water, and the guy panics.
