Ive never married, but there is no way in Hell id ever have a joint checking account with anyone ever.
We are not surprised. People need to realize a joint isn't just 1 account. You have multiples that can be joint/separate if desired.

Separate bank accounts are like joint FB accounts, it means someone cheated (probably the rib).

I have no idea what's the norm. But my wife and I have have a joint account, as well as our own separate accounts. We use the joint to pay bills.
This is the correct answer, quite frankly. Sometimes i want to buy something and not be honest about the cost, and sometimes she wants to do things and not answer any questions about the cost. Also, we occasionally buy things for each other that we intend to be a surprise.
My entire regular paycheck goes into our joint account which she uses to pay the house bills. Her entire paycheck goes into her separate account. She also pays some bills from that account. I have other sources of income including some per diems, reimbursements, mileage, investment income that all goes into my separate account for walking around money. She can look at any account if she wants to.
The key is not counting pennies to make sure that everyone pays an exact share of the bills. That is a formula for arguments. The key is not really caring if your wife makes financial decisions of consequence, and giving her the autonomous power to be an equal partner in the financial management. That eliminates most of the issues that lead to divorce. After all, most good divorces are over money.

Shared is ok, if you know how the transfers are to be divided.
Ie if our paychecks went to the same checking account. I know how to divide that into bills/investments/entertainment/ spending and etc.

Such an odd sentence

Married 20 years seperate accounts. Would probably be divorced if had one...
Wife spends more than she makes. Only way to keep her in check. It's not about who pays what bills.

Wife and I have separate accounts but both have full access to each account I pay almost all of the bills out of my account and use hers as a spending account
It works great for us. She does not like dealing with the money and I do.

Imo, the key is figuring out what you want your lifestyle to be.
People like to be cool and eat shite because someone else liked it and that should be the standard.
Life should be simple imo.

We have separate spending accounts but joint bill account and savings. It's just what works best for us.

she will just buy stupid shite sometimes. For example our daughter is moving into a one bedroom apartment this semester. She buys all this cooking shite for her and place settings for 8. Our daughter has the domestic skills of a kangaroo and you can’t even fit 8 people in this apartment.
I have the same wife

Wife and I keep separate finances for protection.

This can be problematic if your spouse is a socialist and has no idea how to manage money.

Separate accounts, I’m a saver/ she’s a spender, it keeps me from losing my shite over her spending.
I pay the house note and car insurance and cable. She pays light bill and cell bill, we split the groceries.

Spin-off From Another Thread: Is Separate Checking Accounts For Husband And Wife…
….the norm these days? My wife and I don’t, but we are almost 50, so we aren’t young and hip.
The wife and I have our own separate checking and savings account and then a joint checking and a joint savings account. Each pay period a set amount goes into joint checking with a trigger that deposits into joint checking over a certain amount (which is far less than our individual contributions) pushes a transfer of a specific amount from joint checking to joint savings.
Therefore, her money is hers to spend and my money is mine to spend and the joint accounts are for the mortgage, utilities car notes (which we don't have at the moment) and groceries for the house.
We have complete access to each other's accounts in case of emergencies but we don't do anything in them without the other's permissions and we discuss non-routine charges to the joint account with each other ahead of time (like making a sizeable donation to a charity, for example).
We're in our 50s and have had this setup since we got married.

I’m older than you OP and we’ve had separate accounts since day one. We do have a joint account for bills, but we’ve never commingled funds otherwise.

My wife has an account that part of my pay goes directly into. I don't even see it. It's her "salary" as a stay at home mom.
I handle 100% of the finances she buys the groceries with her salary.
Early in our marriage we had a joint account and my wife never once looked at what was being spent she just knew it would be covered.
This caused me a great deal of stress and more than a few arguments. I created her account and we've not had an issue since. Once her money is gone, it's gone and she has to wait until payday.
It was funny when covid hit. She went from saying "I never have any money" to " We can go to Hawaii on what I've saved". Turns out, spending 10 dollars here and there adds up to a lot of money day in, day out.
