I guess you've not lived enough life. The last part of the brain to go is the brain stem. That controls breathing. You can be absolutely brain dead. That is all the parts of the cerebrum are gone but still respire with the help of a ventilator. My mother in law was in Florida in this situation and we arranged a flight, flew from Texas and gathered in the hospital. They removed the breathing tube and she passed within a few minutes. We probably could have come two days later and had the same outcome.

Sorry her family has to go through that.
But it's harder to have a lot of sympathy on Anne Heche herself. If not for the Grace of God, she could have taken multiple people out with her. She should have never been behind the wheel in her condition.
