From the around-the-league notes section of my Monday musings below: League sources say New Orleans is making a hard push to hire analytics ace Sammy Gelfand away from the Pistons to reunite Gelfand with Pelicans head coach Willie Green.

This is the mark of a winning franchise IMO. Much different approach and demeanor than years past.

Sammy Gelfand is a chick magnet btw.

poster boy for white people hope in the league.

I don't give two shits how he looks...if he can help the team by bringing higher analytics research and thus help Willie Green I'm all for it.

HE DOESN'T CARE. That's how hardcore to winning he is. HE DOESN'T CARE.

Being a "numbers" expert myself...I support Gelfand...110%
BTW: This is meant to be a humorous post, whether it is or isn't.

Can you make it through one "post" without "using" inverted "commas"

Meh… analytics has its place but has taken on way to big of a role across all sports.

Prove it
Baseball: uppercut “HR or K” swings, decline in fundamentals/manufacturing runs, endless shifts
Basketball: abandoning the midrange, way too many 3s

That’s Supersaint when he moved to S.F.

Yeah tbh, some of these shifts in strategy and philosophy driven by analytics has kind of ruined the pure natural beauty of basketball and baseball.
Example. Guys like Ant Edwards should not be taking 9 threes. KAT should play more in the post. Etc.
And in baseball we see a lot of goofy shifts and over conservative pitch counts. Kershaw can be rolli g through 5, but the manager has 2 people warming up in the bullpen before he even takes the mound in the 6th.
Football’s analytics has led to more passing and more 4th down and 2 point conversion attempts, which is actually fun. The only thing holding football back, is the inconsistent officiating and the inconsistent punishments/treatment that the league office gives certain teams.

Shifts are SO effective that MLB is gonna have to outlaw them starting next year. Name of the game when hitting is "get the ball in the air" (sorry, had to get my inverted commas in) In NBA, if shooting more 3s is wrong...every team in the NBA is WRONG...# of 3s goes up every year. Gotta feelin' this Gelfand guy would be quite useful.

“Ruined the natural beauty”
Is an entirely subjective and personal preference based argument. Personally I much, much rather see what the game is today than what it was in the 90’s.
Frankly I think nostalgia has completely papered over how ugly much of basketball was. When the sport was largely 4 guys standing around and you dumping the ball into a center or power forward to iso on the block and chuck up a shot.
As to people taking less threes, why? Kat is one of the best big man shooters in the history of the game, he is not one of the best post players. Play to your strengths.
Furthermore, analytics is a tool. The same analytics that quantified the value of the three and the breakeven point for when it makes more sense to take a three than a two is the same analytics that is also being used as a basis to partially revitalize the mid range game as a means to take advantage of how defenses and rule changes have adjusted to the emphasis on threes. Analytics is not a stagnant science, it evolves with the data, and you want the best people collecting and interpreting that data so you can constantly be at an advantage with changes in how the game is evolving. Wanting anything less than that is just emotional phobia of math.

I never could understand why zone defense was illegal in the NBA. Why did anyone ever think that was a good rule?
The time of the great Magic-Bird rivalry had a lot of great passing and was, perhaps, a fun time to watch the game, but that was before my time. By the time we get to the Jordan era and I started watching basketball, the NBA was a bunch of iso ball, and it was often boring and frustrating to watch.

Right, and that is not to say there wasn't pretty basketball or absolutely awe inspiring players, but the overall game was often, kinda ugly.
At least comparatively.

The problem with your argument is that if your argument was correct, teams would be exploiting these leaks that you listed.
Why aren't they?
