Why do people let their weight get completely out of control?

I have a friend who’s probably between 400 and 500 lbs. He only wears t-shirts and not any other types of shirts because that’s what he’s comfortable in. I don’t understand how it gets to that point

Whenever I’m starting to put on a few lbs, I change my eating and exercise habits. Two things usually motivate me:

1.) I don’t like my appearance when I gain weight.

2.) I feel like shite when I start gaining weight.

I don’t understand how none of that kicks in with the people who let themselves get morbidly obese and end up waddling around all over the place.

Also, obesity drives up healthcare costs and that’s a bad thing for all the rest of us.

Spiraling down the rabbit hole is hard to get out of for some who are grossly overweight. Lack of confidence and self esteem.

Maybe low self-esteem or they've just given up on how people think of them.

Sometimes personal have underlying health issues like thyroid issues or depression or medication side effects.

Depression can be an impossible hole to climb out of.

Society now says fat is beautiful (it’s not though).

Now even fatties can be Victoria’s Secret models and be in SI’s swimsuit issue.

frick ‘em. Heart disease is probably one of the cheaper ailments to die from. The longer they live, the more expensive it is to die from something else.

A bout of deep depression.
Can't seem to move it forward.
My lying eyes lie awake.
Not sure what I am after.

In my early to mid 20s I got up 430 lbs. I hated who I was. I was practically a recluse. I hated going out in public. I have a genetic condition that requires multiple daily steroids. I was grossly mismanaged by a physician during thst period, but I also didn't have the confidence or knowledge at that age to challenge him. I found a new doctor who listened to me, recognized what happened, and worked with me to change things. I had gastric sleeve surgery after going from 430 to 390 with diet alone. I'm around 230 now. I'm still on steroids, and I'll be fighting the side effects of them the rest of my life. But if it's that or death, I'll keep taking the pills. My family did try to help me as my weight went up. Diet suggestions, bringing me healthy foods and recipes, trying to get me to exercise. I have an amazing support system, and they did all they could for me.

When that kind of weight gain happens, the depression that comes with it is insidious. My wife met me when I was 400 lbs, and loved me as much then as she does now. Without her, a competent physician, finding an intrinsic purpose, and the support of my family, I'd have probably been dead by 30. The surgeon who did my sleeve actually told me at 26ish that I'd be dead by 40 if I didn't do something. That's a sobering fricking thing to hear, but I needed it.

I think the OP had people in mind who don't have the issues I did when I was younger, and that's fine. My point is, there's a lot of different reasons people let their weight get so out of hand. You never know what someone you pass on the street has been through or how they got to that point. Being kind and encouraging goes a lot farther than making fat jokes, at least for most people.

Just recently got a bit lazy for a few months. Gained 10 lbs. Cut out fast food and started excersizing regularly again and lost 12 lbs in 9 days.

There were times I was 230+ and legit would have convos in my head about do I just say frick it or start to do something about it. This probably happened 6-7 times.

Finally did something about it and I’m 178 now and have been for 6-months.

I can easily see how others just say frick it.

So you know one person who is morbidly obese and you’re pondering why “people” do what he did?
Ever occur to you that your buddy is an outlier? While many people may be overweight, they’re not all “out of control”. Pudgy, plump, and fat. But not “out of control”.

For some, it's an addiction no different than drugs or alcohol.

I understand everyone is different but I’m at my heaviest ever right now at a chubby 218 pounds and feel like I’m on death’s door . I’ve been hitting the gym hard for a couple weeks now and hoping to get back around 185. I don’t understand how people can eat as much as they do, I feel like it would take effort to put down enough to be obese, unless it’s over a really long period of time and weight gain.

ETA: I’m probably underestimating how gradual it can be for some people. A year of not paying attention to your weight can do a lot of damage but slight and consistent weight gain over 10 years can be like the boiling frog thing. I’m also in my early 20’s so I bet if I kept up the habits that got me to 218, I’d be 300+ by the time I was 40-ish if I didn’t change anything.
