re: Is someone a good man if they derive pleasure from people thinking they are a good man?

Well that ties into the humility factor of it all.
I really like the way Latinos say “de nada” when you say “gracias”. It’s kind of like a “it’s nothing, just the right thing to do”
Instead of “you’re welcome”. Although there’s nothing inherently bad in that either.
I guess it’s something you need taught to you when you are young that sort of seeps into you. That whole “treat others how you would have them treat you.” Sort of thing.
But then being able to maintain that when others don’t give it back…that makes it harder. And if that constantly happens I can see how people would grow bitter.

No one thinks you’re a good man. Half of one, yes.

Its weird. A guy has to be hard and nice. I want to be perceived as both.

if starving kids showed up at your door would you feed them or shut the door in their face

So IYO, in order to be a good person one has to think that they are really a shite person? What a defeatist and weak attitude.
Posted on 7/30/22 at 7:23 pm to fr33manator
A truly good person might not consider themselves good and probably think the good they isnt noteworthy.
But they keep doing it anyway.

I didn’t take it as that. I think it’s more not letting it go to your head. Recognizing that you want to do good, and try to do good, but inherently we are all flawed people.
And when you see yourself acting flawed, trying to correct it and right your wrongs. Having integrity.
And it begs the question, is it a good deed if it doesn’t put you out in some way?

If they have been taught that being human is bad and have had a defeatist attitude instilled in them.

There is nothing wrong with being a good person and believing as much, it’s delusional to be a good person and think otherwise.

I would actually argue that one thinking they are inherently bad is harmful. One is may more likely to commit a bad action if they think they are not good.

A good person aims at what is good. As long as you focus your aim on what is actually good, you can rest easy knowing the Lord God forgave you for how short you fall in that aim.

Could be. Is a carpenter really a carpenter if he likes it when people enjoy his work?

Whenever it wants to be, shite lord.

My abusive father turned me into a people pleaser at an early age.
I’m always upbeat, and consciously and probably subconsciously I try to project an easy going nature.
But, as I am nice when I first meet someone and try my best to be a nice guy, I’ll grow to resent a person if they constantly let me down or annoy me.
Passive aggressive people are the one type of person I usually have no tolerance from

No, but they should be their own harshest critic. That leads to self improvement.

Correct. That is perfectly what I meant. Well said.

Those are often the single best deeds. The ones that are unpopular now that you are in your heart of hearts convinced is morally righteous. Courage is rarely popular at the time the courageous deed is done.

I don’t think that though.
