Wikipedia changes the definition of the word Definition

After the backlash it received from changing the definition of the word Recession, Wikipedia has decided to change what the word Definition means.

In their propaganda today’s dictators rely for the most part on repetition, suppression and rationalization — the repetition of catchwords which they wish to be accepted as true, the suppression of facts which they wish to be ignored, the arousal and rationalization of passions which may be used in the interests of the Party or the State.
As the art and science of manipulation come to be better understood, the dictators of the future will doubtless learn to combine these techniques with the non-stop distractions which, in the West, are now threatening to drown in a sea of irrelevance the rational propaganda essential to the maintenance of individual liberty and the survival of democratic institutions.

quote:
Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition, we're not far from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for committing thoughtcrime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control. But in the end there won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will be complete when the language is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc is Newspeak,' he added with a sort of mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?'

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day be day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except the endless present in which the party is always right." -- George Orwell

You realize that basically anyone can change a Wikipedia entry, right?

I don't think you understand how Wikipedia works.

I like that.
“A fluid statement”
I think I’m gonna start using that so when some one takes what i say the wrong way, i will just explain that what i said was a fluid statement and can be put into categories

Change the language, change the culture.
When you protect soft people, they get softer, not better.

This is why physical media is still and will always be so important. The internet has been great at bringing so much information to so many more people. But the internet can be manipulated much more easily than a book in my house.
That said, it looks like it has already been updated…at least Wikipedia didn’t lock the entry like they did after the term “recession” was redefined to exclude language referring to two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.

A definition is a statement of the meaning of a term (a word, phrase, or other set of symbols).[1][2] Definitions can be classified into two large categories, intensional definitions (which try to give the sense of a term) and extensional definitions (which try to list the objects that a term describes).[3] Another important category of definitions is the class of ostensive definitions, which convey the meaning of a term by pointing out examples. A term may have many different senses and multiple meanings, and thus require multiple definitions.[4][a]

Wiki can be easily changed, but as of now, this is what it says for definition, and the word "fluid" is not there:

Sad. Right before our eyes. China style stuff. 1984 stuff.
1984 was one of the scariest books I have ever read. It was what horror films are like to others.

Yeah, I saw that and updated my post about that too. It’s good that Wikipedia didn’t lock the page like they did with the “recession” page so that cooler heads could prevail.
This is an interesting test of Wikipedia though; open sourcing works so well, but when concrete definitions (i.e. objective truth) are coming into question by certain political ideologues who have the power to manipulate pages people use as references, we really need to teach the next generation to be skeptical and think through what they’re reading, get multiple sources, etc.
Reminds me of that famous Michael Scott line…

Is this real? That’s not what wiki says when googled

It was probably edited and then someone changed it back. Anyone can edit Wikipedia pages until Wikipedia places a lock.

Yes, and that kind of feeds into the point the OP is trying to make. No one has a Webster dictionary sitting on their book shelf anymore. Hell most people don’t even have bookshelves with books anymore. If you control language you can control society. They change the meaning of words constantly to make things fit there narrative with the bigger irony of all redefining the meaning of definition. Wiki being one of the tools they use.
